Anyone here have any suggestion as to how one can return to iTunes 10? While
updating several things in ML this morning, I accidentally included iTunes
11. Took me about 30 seconds to determine that I detest the new design. Time
Machine, from my most recent backup, will fetch the iTunes application and
ask if I want to replace, cancel or keep both as normal, but it doesn't. My
backup from SuperDuper, when dragged to the applications folder complains
that "iTunes is part of the System and cannot be removed". Any thoughts
appreciated in advance!

Meh. First thing I did was configure iTunes 11 to use the same views I
used in iTunes 10, and I've ben happily using 11 ever since. No need to
downgrade.

Same here. There seems to be no way to get 11 out of icon view of
albums, but since I never use the album view it doesn't bother me.

I was able to get Itunes 11 to mimic pretty much the setup I had and
used in previous itunes. So there was no real loss of functionlity for me.

I do miss the ability to "search store" right from a menu item, and the
store no longer habving advanced search.

Note that I am on snow leopard, so I assume itunes 11 behaves slightly
differently because many things are not enabled on it.

Hey JR! Sorry about the recent gaffe. Glad to see you again. You know of a
way to re-instate CoverFlow and the left sidebar? That is what is primarily
driving me nuts with all of small album cover icons.

I think Cover Flow is gone. For the left sidebar, select 'Show Sidebar'
under the View menu.

No worries. It wasn't your fault - simple misunderstanding. : )

The left sidebar is easy:

     View > View Sidebar

I'm not sure about CoverFlow though - I never use it myself.

It's not as easy as replacing iTunes.app. The new iTunes includes modifications to the System. Reverting means restoring your last Time Machine or other full system backup that was made before you upgraded.

But I agree with JR. Poke around in the menus of iTunes 11 and you'll find that it's possible to largely return to the iTunes 10-style interface.

I read someplace that going back is very difficult -- the new version
rearranges the database or something.

Wich means that an iTunes library compatible with iTunes 10 must be
recovered from backup. If you lack a Time machine backup you might
be stuck. And any additions made after that backup may be lost.

there are 3 major steps:

within your iTunes folder you will find a folder "Previuous iTunes
Libraries". The probably newest file in there is the library compatible
with 10.7.
Rename the "iTunes Library" file directly in the iTunes folder to
something else.
Move the file found in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" one level up to
the "iTunes" folder
Rename it "iTunes Library"

Get hold of a copy of Pacifist:
<http://www.charlessoft.com/>

Get hold of iTunes 10.7:
<http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576>
For international users: get it from the US site, localised Apple Sites
may link to the current (11.x) version of iTunes...

Install Pacifist
Mount the iTunes 10.7 installer image (don't install!)
Start Pacisfist
Let it install iTunes from the mounted image with administrator
privilegies and tell ist to REPLACE all files that it encounters.

You should be done (maybe don't start iTunes for the firdt time from the
dock, rather from tha Applications folder)

Cheers
Andreas

Andreas, this looks promising. Thanks for the information!

I want to try this before I replace the entire drive from B/U because the
better half put a lot of work into scanning not very widely available
CD/Album artwork some being custom, and we LIKE CoverFlow.

Let me try and clarify: The latest version of the file named iTunes Library
inside the Previous iTunes folder should be taken out of the folder and
placed in the next level up, still inside the iTunes folder, which is inside
the Music folder, which is inside *my* User folder. Then it should be
renamed "iTunes Library", because the one already there that was created by
upgrading to iTunes 11 also has that name. But, BEFORE I make that move, I
should rename THAT file created by installing iTunes 11 to anything else, so
there would be no conflict when I place the 10.7 Library on the same level,
just inside the iTunes folder.

And just what is Pacifist, BTW?

THANKS! If this works, it is GOLD!

Also, guys I do appreciate the info about as to just why I simply cannot
replace the iTunes.app file without disruption to System and general havoc.

I will report back with results...

normally yes. There are users who have their iTunes Media in other
places. This can be checked in iTunes settings an can be changed by
starting iTunes with the option kex pressed. The files in the "Previous
iTunes Libraries" carry a date in their name, the latest one will have
the date on when you started iTunes 11 for the first time.

You can also duplicate the file before moving it to be on the safe side.
The idea is to replace the "iTunes Library" file created by iTunes 11
with the 10.7 version.
