#103705 — Have I just not yet found the setting I need to twiddle?

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I've recently moved from Tiger
10.4.11 to Lion 10.7.5, and now that I'm getting "settled in", I'm
noticing something that annoys the bejeebers out of me - under Tiger, an
open folder window includes a handy little "<some number> items, <some
bytes> available" dingus in the footer of the window. The "<some bytes>"
part I really couldn't much give a rip about (although it is
occasionally at least marginally useful), but the item count is
something that I find *EXTREMELY* useful in several "things I do often"
scenarios.

Is there a way to get that behavior back under Lion - some setting I
haven't stumbled across, perhaps, or a pref I haven't noticed somewhere,
or even something that needs (for instance) Onyx or Deeper to get to and
mess with? I'm finding that I severely miss having the number of items
in the folder available at a glance. While it's certainly possible to
sit there and manually count how many items are in a folder when I need
to know, doing so *REALLY* puts a crimp in my workflow - never mind the
concept that a computer is supposed to help eliminate such drudgery...

Or is this another one of the many "improved by being removed" things
I've been noticing more and more of since making the switch?

The Finder's "View" menu is your friend.

Ugh. Lion was Apple's Windows Vista. *Anything* is better.

If you disapprove of my making do with the best I can afford, you're
more than welcome to fix that by buying me the newest bestest latest and
greatest anytime you feel like doing so. Until then... <shrug> I'm stuck
using what I can buy.

Yeah. : ( Like I said, if this is a machine you use regularly, your best
course of action is to obtain a newer machine. If money is an issue,
take a look at Apple's refurbished offerings or eBay.

Yup!
The other place to consider looking for a more recent used Mac is OWC.

Yep, 10.7 and 10.8 were both transitional releases, each with their own
set of nasty bugs and feature inconsistencies, especially with regard to
iCloud integration, which was just ramping up at the time. 10.9 and
10.10 were much better, but also had some particularly troublesome
issues with networking. Things have gotten much more stable and
issue-free in the last couple releases.

If, like the OP, you are capped at 10.7 anyway, I'd probably roll back
to 10.6.8. You're out of support anyway, and the web will be largely
unusable, but 10.6.8 is better than 10.7.x

Snow Leopard, while one version older than Lion, is infinitely better.
Both are very old now but Snow Leopard was an excellent OS X version.
Lion was absolutely awful.

In terms of stability, I agree. In terms of security, definitely not.
But it's also true that both suffer from security vulnerabilities that
have been patched in later releases. So again, if you are using the
machine regularly to access the net, the best thing you can do is retire
it and replace it with something more modern and more secure.

If awful is better than excellent in the world you live in, it must
