I had a similar experience trying to use Mail Drop from a non-iCloud
account on one of my machines once. But letting it hang for long enough to
delete the message was all that was needed. If you don't have the patience
to let it do its thing, try deleting it at night before you go to bed and
let it "hang" while it processes the deletion.
