1118 is in the normal range. 50,000 within a day is pretty high. Note
that the counter starts at boot, so the longer your machine runs, the
higher the number will go.

I'm not sure why you are so fixated on whether there is a swap file -
it's inconsequential.

What looks buggy? The Menu Meters swap file widget? That wouldn't
surprise me. I used to use it and it was rather buggy compared with
other alternatives.

Memory pressure is more useful as an indicator of low memory. 

If you want to see pageouts, you can run this command in a terminal window:

# memory_pressure 

The system has 2147483648 (524288 pages with a page size of 4096).
