Is it set to check "Automatically" or at an interval?

(I'm pretty sure I had mine set to 30 minutes but I just checked it and 
it was set to automatically.  May have happened on update to 10.11).

If Automatic then the rules it follows are out of your hand and changing 
spaces might be one of the criteria to check - or something that just 
makes it seem that way.

Automatic (per one thing I found in the webiverse) claims that if the 
mac is plugged in, then it will check more often while set.
