Maybe - but I've got tons and no issues.  You could sqlite vacuum your 
mail folder as well.  Look up the correct command for your v. of Mail 
and verify where your "Envelope" is located:

Exit Mail first.

sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope\ Index vacuum;

Yosemite (V3)
sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/V3/MailData/Envelope\ Index vacuum;
