Thanks. I mean before I even get into the mode. I click and hold the green
button and it starts the mode... allowing me to pick a side. Fine. But I
decide I do not want either... keep in windowed. And there is no way to back
out except to go into the mode and then click the desktop.

Seems escape should work... and dragging to the top of the screen.

Also: if I want both to go back to being windows then I have to go to
Mission Control or jump between Spaces.
