It could be a corrupted message that Mail is trying to sort or display
(I vaguely recall reading about messages with certain subjects or
attachments causing an issue, but can't remember where I read it).
More likely it's a corruption in the preferences or mailbox. Try either:
- moving Mail's data from the User folder to somewhere else
safe and then running the app,
- creating a new user account and running Mail under that.
Mail will probably now run fine then, but you won't have any mail
accounts, messages, or customised rules / mailboxes. If you're using
IMAP, then the messages will re-appear once you recreate the mail
account.
