The difference is getting fuzzier as mobile phones get "smarter", but
very basically:
- Mail is for emails and is sent and received using your
mobile phone plan's data connection / limits (which can
be expensive if you over run the free monthly amount)
when your out and about - when you're at home Mail can
use your home wi-fi internet connection, which is much
cheaper. Emails are usually longer.
- Messages is the old TXT message system between mobile
phones and it uses your mobile phone plan's TXT (or Text)
message limits when you're out and about. Messages are
usually short.
Apple has blurred the lines even further with their own proprietary
messaging system between Apple devices, but it's largely invisible to
the user in the Messages app, so best not to worry about it. Just send
TXT messages to people in your address book and they'll route
themselves via the appropriate system.
