As others have said you can link the two routers by ethernet by a cable
or powerline - I wouldn't attempt to do this wirelessly as the whole
point is you want a wifi hub some way from your main router.

In my house I have a cable router on the ground floor that is wired to
ethernet outlets to other rooms around the house and also has both 2.4
GHz and 5 GHz wifi.

On the first floor I have another wireless router that is connected to
the main router by ethernet. This acts as a wifi hub not a router and
simply broadcasts another wifi channel so we can use ipads etc better
at the top of the house. To turn a router into a hub you need to
disable DHCP so it acts as a dumb pass-through device. This is the
crucial step and means you should be able to mix routers on the
network. I have three different SSIDs in the house - not sure if you
can combine into one.

There is no substitute for wired distribution especially in a big
house. I haven't tried mains powerline but am told it does work well.
When we moved into our house I had the electrical wiring redone and at
the same time got ethernet put into all the bedrooms, and some other
rooms including my office room, with a patch panel on the ground floor
where the cable comes in. This was money very well spent.
