Putting a small e-ink screens on each individual key would almost
certainly make the new MacBook Air would end up thicker than the
MacBook and new MacBook Pro ... Ive would have a complete mental
breakdown. (There have already been other keyboards with little LCDs on
each individual key which can be software changed to display different
things, but such keyboards have been fairly expensive.)

The only way that rumour makes any remote sense is if it's a flat
touchscreen "keyboard" with the "keys" drawn on an e-ink display (and
possibly some sort of haptic feedback to give it a faked "real key"
sensation) ... but touchscreen keyboards are disgusting to use for more
than a short time (as are other flat keyboards, like the membrane ones
on the first Sinclair / Timex computers).

Whichever turns out to be tur, if any of it, it's going to be more
power hungry (even with e-ink's lower power requirements than other
flatscreens), so need a bigger battery which again means a thicker
MacBook Air.
