I've been flying mostly A/A missions, but I just tried the A/G Radar 
Modes Training Mission and it seemed to be working as expected for me. 
I can select targets and modes, and the scope and HUD seem to update and 
reflect my selections.  I did notice that if all I have is gun round the 
radar will not allow me to select anything other than Straff mode in A/G.

You may want to consider moving off of the Macbook for better graphics 
processing, as you suggest.  I can highly recommend the Mac Mini/TV 
setup - it looks and responds great!  I'm in the process of collecting 
parts to build a cockpit around this setup.
