#36942 — ftp software

Subjectftp software
Message-ID<2016101615500919888-xxx@yyyzzz>
Migrating from CyberDuck.

I see there is Interachy, Transmit, Yummy FTP, Fetch and others

I have no exotic needs. But I do have one folder on my HD that I would
like when it changes to automatically sync to my server, rather than to
do it manually each time.

I think the guys at Panic (Transmit) are responsive and a creative
crew. Interarchy seems to have changed hands and done no updates for
many years. That's all I know.

I use rsync for that. FTP is the suck.

If you could do a sort of relief map of sinfulness, wickedness and
all-round immorality, rather like those representations of the
gravitational field around a Black Hole, then even in Ankh-Morpork the
Shades would be represented by a shaft. In fact the Shades was
remarkably like the aforesaid well-known astrological phenomenon: it had
a certain strong attraction, no light escaped from it, and it could
indeed become a gateway to another world. The next one.

Use what used to be called BitTorrent Sync. It's set and forget.
Awesome. Works a treat. You won't be disappointed.

So does it handle straight sftp as well?

It doesn't do ftp at all. It keeps a folder in syn between an arbitrary
number of machines. For example, my web site folder is 125GB, and it is
synced between my iMac, my Mac mini, my Synology, and my freeBSD server.

Well, here's the thing: It's not really FTP. You/It create(s) a folder
at the send location and at the receive location. Then, whatever you put
in the one folder simply appears automatically in the other. It's how I
get my Voice Memos from my iPhone to my MyBookLive external storage.

You're using Unison. Look at the earlier posts in this thread.

If I did that, I wouldn't have given him a gentle nudge to avoid
trimming the most elements of information from his response.

What on Earth are you talking about? It's a simple matter to read previous
posts. If you can't figure out how to do it in Unison, then certainly you
can use Google Groups to read previous posts.

Clearly you don't use Unison. Yes, I can always hunt it down in a
minute or sometimes more, despite the somewhat idiosyncratic
date-sorting of Unison particularly in longer topics, and despite the
fact that searches don't work with many non-alpha characters, like even
dashes, for instance, but surely you see the utility in not trimming
out the most significant elements, like the topic sentence in a
discussion, no?

Speaking of ftp software (hopefully), does Fetch, or any of the
mentioned ftp software, generally allow access to Mac iCloud files?

Sounds like you need to pick a better Usenet client. Or use Google
Groups if you can't remember what was said. ; )

iCloud isn't an FTP server.

I know. The programs I've been testing (Fetch, Interarchy and Transmit
currently) seem to make use of a number of types of
protocols/methodologies. I see FTP/SFTP, Amazon S3, WebDAV, Bonjour
and others, including words (SSH) and phrases I have little or no
familiarity with. One of them has an icon indicating "Cloud", which
made me wonder about such access.

My question is whether these programs can communicate with iCloud, via
one of these types of protocols or other protocols I haven't named that
may accessible via these programs or other similar programs.

*shrug* I don't need a separate program to use iCloud since iCloud
functionality is already built into macOS. If you realy feel you need
such a thing, why not try them out and see for yourself?

It's just a point of curiousity. I see I can open my local iCloud
Drive, so it likely is irrelevant.

I'm doing it in Thunderbird even though it does have the little lines to
follow. Can't remember what I used to use that had the little lines.
Maybe Free Agent.

It's admittedly been a while since I used Unison; but I could swear it
was brain-dead easy to view previous posts in that view!
