The articles quoted say Apple said they will never patch the security
bugs. That's why even the US Government said to uninstall Quicktime.

The article is from The Register, and I trust the Register to report
facts as much as I trust, say, Faux News or Holocaust deniers.

I doubt that. Quite a few Windows users have an iPhone or iPad and AFAIK
they need iTunes to create a backup (amongst other things).

No, I downloaded the current version for Windows
and it is simply missing QuickTime.msi .

And that has been the case (apparently) since some
time in 2014. I found an announcement for it, on
a web page.

It runs just fine, and would only complain about
no QuickTime, if you attempt to play a movie.

In which case, it recommends you "Open with"
some other movie player.

I actually installed it in a VM and tested it,
and it starts up just fine with no QuickTime
present. So the unbundling happened a bit more
than a year ago, and only now is a third party
sticking a fork in QuickTime, making this
topic a more popular one. My guess is,
they knew they weren't going to support
security updates for QuickTime any longer,
a year ago, and quietly unbundled it.

If you have a much older copy of iTunes, it might
still have a fixation on QuickTime. I don't know
how practical it would be for a regular user
to be doing that (using an ancient version
for some reason). If your version is from
before 10.5, then it might get upset if
you remove QuickTime. If you got iTunes
recently, it will no longer care about
QuickTime (i.e. refuse to start). So Apple
handled this properly. If you've been
keeping your iTunes up to date, you
have nothing to worry about when it
comes time to remove QuickTime.

The problem with "keeping iTunes up to date" is that Apple keeps
removing useful features and adding useless ones. ("Useful" and
"useless" to me, owner of an iPod but no iPhone or other Apple
device.)

QuickTime has been deprecated for many years and developers have
long been asked to use a newer API called AVFoundation instead.

They explained when Apple removed Quicktime.

iTunes will still work. Your music will still play. Your iPod will
still interface with iTunes. iTunes will still manage your collection.

The Register is more about attention sucking headlines and shit
disturbing than reporting unbiased facts. That said, now you've got it:
Quicktime is about video. iTunes will still play and manage your audio.

I never said that the US Government was telling anyone to
uninstall iTunes.

I read the articles in the op and what I gathered was
that Apple removed Quicktime long ago from iTunes, and
that Apple knows about these security bugs and that Apple
told Trend Micro that they won't fix them so Trend Micro
and the US Governement (and everyone else) told Windows
users to uninstall Quicktime (which must be OK with Apple).

Some people have Quicktime and don't even know it, so,
it's a good thing that this happened because Quicktime is
part of the infestation that is iTunes.

Thanks, everyone, for this thread.

It's prompted me to think things through and I've realised that I've
reduced my iTunes usage over the years so that I never connect my iPhone
or iPads to it any more. The only thing I use it for is syncing my iPod
music, but I start it up with gritted teeth and a sense of foreboding.

And there's the answer. I've just placed an order at Amazon for a Sony
Walkman. As soon as I've got my music loaded, a 64GB iPod Touch in
first-rate condition with a striking pink leather case will be appearing
on eBay. And I'll uninstall everything Apple from my PC. I can hardly wait.

This is our music from the bachelor's den, the sound of loneliness
turned up to ten. A harsh soundtrack from a stagnant waterbed and it
sounds just like this. This is the sound of someone losing the plot
making out that they're OK when they're not. You're gonna like it, but
not a lot. And the chorus goes like this...

FWIW, here's a quick update. It's all gone according to plan.

For the iPod I had to create MP3 copies of my 16,000 CD-quality master
files (350GB), import those MP3s into the iTunes library, then use
iTunes to sync them to the iPod.

Now I use my generic file sync program to sync those CD-quality files
directly with the MP3s in the Walkman, with on-the-fly compression. One
step instead of three, more controllable, *much* simpler.

The Walkman needs no special software - it plugs into the PC's USB port
and is ready to go. It appears as a normal disk drive, and the
folder/file names are the artist/album/track names just as I like them.

For the iPod I needed a 68GB store of MP3 files, and iTunes. None of
them are needed any more so I've gleefully deleted them, and all that
other stuff that got installed with iTunes.

The Sony also seems to be a better music player than the iPod (sound
quality and capacity), though that isn't really the point. I'm giving
the iPod to my niece so it's winners all round. :-)

Good then someone else who can actually appreciate it will put it to good use.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.
