It’s not *your* name anyway; it’s just your > > *parent’s* name for you. > > Why is it called given then? Don't you own that that's given to you? You are also given the food that you eat and the air that you breathe, but you don’t really “own” them. You are *assigned* all sorts of identifiers over the course of your life, very few of which really *belong* to you. In most cases, they aren’t even *chosen* by you. Likewise, you generally get your religion from your parents, but you don’t “own” that, either. You might even change your religious beliefs when you get older, just like you may change your name (for whatever reason). Changing your birth-assigned name is, I think, far less likely than changing your birth-assigned religion. The only important question here, though, is whether or not a child raised using a Mac can be saved from turning into a Windows-using heretic. :-) -- "Also . . . I can kill you with my brain." Son one chooses life as a Baroque musician¹ and stays with Mac (though dabbling in Windows occasionally). Son two, in spite of choosing a programming career, embraces Windows, not even liking Linux.

Well, he's not just a user; and he knows which side of his bread is buttered. My son, a CS grad, uses Win7. But he got the source code for his Android phone, removed the parts he didn't like, re-compiled and installed that on his phone. Windows and Android are really best suited to CS grads who can use them appropriately. All the people who don't know a thing about computers have Windows. It's a shame. They want it to be an information appliance that's as easy to use as their TV, but when you tell them that that's what a Mac is, they still buy Windows PCs. Then when they become apoplectic using Windows, you have to go easy on the I-told-you-sos. -- Malcolm

And having used it at work (software engineering) from 1997 till retirement in 2014, I can also state that the only versions I can even tolerate are Windows 2000, XP, and 7. Everything before or after is proctalgia. Those three are, dare I say?, actually not too bad. But I still far prefer OS X and a few Linux versions.

My daughter´s first computer was a Mac. Then, because all of her friends had lots of games on their cool windows machines that were "way better than the mac" she bought herself a windoser. That was about 4 years ago. Now the windoser is collecting dust and she is using her old Mac again :-)

That IS an important question and I pray the answer is yes. I was coerced (from Amiga) to be a Win-using heretic. I needed no other impetus than Windows to become a born again Mac user. That said, my 2 PCs have become Linux machines (and are entirely redeemed because of it). -- Malcolm

That said, my 2 > PCs have become Linux machines (and are entirely redeemed because of it). I saw the first Mac ads and went to try one out. Crashed several times in a few minutes. So I bought an Amiga 1000. When Amiga went under (sort of), Macs had evolved to be usable, and I switched. I was about to switch to Windows 2000 because OS 9 was less reliable, but Apple saved themselves by switching to a Unix core and a much better GUI.
