It's hard to tell from the image: Is the partition you are trying to
delete the very first partition on this disk?

Actually, I don't care. I'd just like to reformat the drive with no
partitions. Earlier versions of DU (I think) let you re-partitions with
one partition. Couldn't figure out how to do it in this version of DU.

Have you clicked on the other side of the pie chart or tried dragging
the circular "handle" at the bottom? I have never used El Capitan's Disk
Utility, but it looks like the first partition (on the right) is the one
selected (blue).

Yes. I'm pretty sure you can't delete the very first partition, which is
why I asked.

In addition to deep sixing extra partitions by erasing the drive it
looks like the way to re-format is to simply pick a format version and
hit apply in the partition menu. Looks like I spent a lot unnecessary
time avoiding the obvious.

Maybe. I'm still running Yosemite at home, but from what I've seen, lots
of people are having a hard time adjusting to the new interface.

Tried dragging the partition I wanted to delete but it would not go to
zero and disappear. That and subsequent dragging attempts seemed to
have created more partitions. Not sure why that happened. Still no joy
when I select a different partition. "-" is still greyed out.

Try unmounting the two partitions on the drive first, then see if it
will let you delete the partitions and create a new one.

[Side note: this is the first time I've looked at diskutility since
upgrading to El Capitan. Yowzah did they ever iTunes it up! Do I
really need the disk utility to tell me how much of my harddrive is
audio/video/other? Nope.]

Good Luck,
Jerry

Sadly, no joy. Dismounted what has morphed into four partitions and the
"-" is still greyed out.

Looks like I may have figured out what to do. After dismounting the
partitions I erased the drive which has given me a drive without partitions.

...with *one* partition, technically, but yes.
