Hello.

Where can I download the older versions of XCodes for the older Mac OS X
versions like v10.8.5 (Mountain Lion)? App Store only has it for
v10.10.5. :(

Thank you in advance. :)

I didn't see it on https://developer.apple.com/xcode/download/ ? Where
in it if it is not there?

You'll need to download it manually from Apple's developer web site:

<https://developer.apple.com/downloads/>

I believe the latest version for 10.8 would be Xcode 5. So search for
Xcode 5 and grab the latest version.

...OR...

If you don't plan to do Xcode software development and just need the
command-line tools, you can find those by searching for "Command Line
Tools" and pick the latest version for Mountain Lion.

Ah, it's not in https://developer.apple.com/xcode/download/ web page,
but https://developer.apple.com/downloads/ (logged in too). Thanks. :)

Well, I am trying to compile smartmontools in Mac OS X v10.8.5 from

It doesn't appear you need Xcode for that - just the command-line tools.

Wrong. You need BOTH. The command-line tools are extra and won't run
without Xcode. They use the same license. Or you can waste your time
and only download the command-line tools, try it, and then wait for the
3GB download for Xcode.

From the instructions, there is no need to run Xcode since everything is
compiled on the command line.

That's certainly not the case with 10.9 and later:

<http://osxdaily.com/2014/02/12/install-command-line-tools-mac-os-x/>

I figured since Apple provides a stand-alone installer for the command line
tools for Mountain Lion, perhaps you could install just that. Perhaps
that's an incorrect assumption.

I'll try the command line tools only and see what happens. My client is
using his MPB for now. I'll get back to it later.

Hey guys.
http://adcdownload.apple.com/Developer_Tools/command_line_tools_os_x_mountain_lion_for_xcode__april_2014/command_line_tools_for_osx_mountain_lion_april_2014.dmg
was all I needed to be able to compile SmartMonTools v6.4 in Mac OS X
v10.8.5. In Mac OS X v10.10.5, I already had the full Xcode v7
downloaded and installed for iOS Simulator. :)

That's what I figured. Thanks for the confirmation.

All I can say is that the developers said they needed the command line
tools *and* Xcode in their environment. If they wanted to sign
anything, Xcode was required. The command line tools would compile
things but I don't think you can't code-sign an application.

Interesting, because the instructions don't say to open Xcode at all as far
as I saw.

I installed the command-line tools and tried to install gcc from
homebrew and was prompted for the Xcode image and had to click the
"Approve license" dialog when I was developing the on-boarding script
for developer's machines.

Since then, I downloaded the command-line tools and Xcode, clicked Xcode
to accept the license, install the tools, *then* install the packages.
That proceeds without further requests for prompts. I managed to get
the entire process down to 1 hour but could never get it totally
automated because various applications (Office, SourceTree, Viscosity,
and yes, Xcode) required drag/drop into the Applications folder. I
supposed I could have just rsync'ed mounted DMG files, but I only got
1-2 installed a month, then the company was bought and Macs officially
discontinued as supported Desktop machines.

Ant isn't trying to install GCC from homebrew.

Correct. This is a client's MBP, not my work's. I was trying to get
the (lat/new)est SMARTmonTools to see if the results were different. ;)
