Hello.

On this 2012's 13.3" MacBook Pro with its updated Mac OS X v10.8.5 and
HDD, I am unable to get the exact free disk space to match each other.
http://i.imgur.com/KGIzE6z.jpg has a screen capture of all of them
together in action. I am confused. Which one is correct then?

Thank you in advance. :)

They both are. One is GB and the other is GiB.

https://www.google.com/search?q=552GB%20in%20GiB

552 GB is just about 514GiB, close enough.

Thanks, but what about that 749.3 GB free in the top right corner under
Mac's HD icon?

No idea. I've never had drive icons on my desktop under OS X and I don't
know where that label came from.

It's an option in View Options for the Desktop folder.

I looked at enabling item info and putting the drive on the desktop. The
hint is in the ...

My label shows "249.78 G...06 GB free"

On mouse over, it shows the full line, "249.78GB, 47.06 GB free"

Ohhhhhhhh! Good catch. Hmm, how can I show all text without being
abbreviated(?)?

Change the size of the icon and importantly, grid spacing. (Finder-

They're tiny enough for my old compoud eyes. :P I'll try John's ideas.

They're probably both "correct" ... from a certain point of view (to
quote obi-Wan Kenobi). :-)

It's possibly an issue caused by different methods of measuring drive
space. Some places correctly use 1024K to be 1MB, while others
ridiculously and stupidly use 1000K to be 1MB. (The second option was
created by scum drive manufacturers to make their drives look more
spacious than they really are).

Thanks, but what about that 749.3 GB free in the top right corner under

I've never seen an option to display the free space in the drive's name
(no it that I've actually looked for one and it could be some
third-party add-on), so my *guess* would be that someone simply typed
that in as the drive's name at some stage and it isn't really connected
to anything at all nor ever updated as a "live" number.

click on that "749.3...GB free" in the top right corner and you will see
that the "..." will expand and give you more information.

Cheers

Ahh! Good catch. I wonder if there is a way to show all the
abbreviated(?) texts.

That 749.3 GB matches what the Info window shows for Available space. So
what about it?

If you want to turn that feature off, then:

1. Click the desktop to bring it to the front.
2. From the Finder menu bar, choose View > Show View Options.
3. Clear the "Show item info" check box.
