What make and model printers were these - or is that a top secret you
refuse to tell for some reason?

Didn't seem important. I don't own either, but one was a Brother, and
the other was a Canon.

of course it's important. some printers are supported and other
printers are not.

whatever printer you had apparently was among the latter group.

well that narrows it down.

Apparently both were supported the second time and not the first.
The Canon was quite new; I don't know how long my sister had owned the
Brother.

With the manufacturer's pile of bloatware, the Brother would print but
not scan. With Apple's much smaller and much less obvious drivers, it
did both.

the list is not static. new printers get added all the time. old ones
stop being supported.

What I said happened happened. Someone else's printers would not print.
Apple did not offer to install anything. Manufacturer's drivers came
with a load of unnecessary crap, and in the case of the Brother, the
scanner portion did not even work with their bloat installed. Yes, _I_
manually ran their installers.

When I left, I deleted the junk.

When I came back, the printer(s) were still on the printer list with the
error icon, but selecting them resulted in an offer to install drivers.
These were typical low-profile Apple drivers, not the boatload of junk
gratuitously pushed on me by the printer manufacturers the first
go-round. And the Apple ones _did_ support scanning.

So, you want to join Mr. Everyone's-A-Liar now?

No one is immune to PEBKAC, but after more than thirty years in software
engineering, I probably have SOME resistance.

PEBKAC could explain that. For instance if the printer wasn't connected
to the Mac or turned on when the user added a new printer in System
preferences, then the OS wouldn't offer to install drivers. There are
plenty of other things might have been done wrong by the user.

Manufacturer's drivers from the CD/DVD that came with the printer would
likely be outdated by the time you installed them.

Who knows what you actually deleted, or how...

Nope, just speculating on what went wrong - and it's quite possible the
PEBKAC.

Sure. Though with the information you have provided so far, it's really
hard to say either way.

You asked someone else, but I have an iPod and I use SharePod,
which is portable so it runs off the iPod itself (nothing is
installed on Windows).

I can copy any non-DRM song I want from any iPod in the house
to any PC in the house, and nothing is installed on any of the
PCs.

What do you use to do that?

Does that message come up every time you start iTunes, or is it just

It appears the design changed at some point.

I only download copies of iTunes, to test it for people.
QuickTime always used to be bundled with it. I just
checked a copy a few minutes ago, and QuickTime.msi
isn't included. So the design is unbundled now.

https://web.archive.org/web/20141126112145/http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203459

    2014/11/26

You may receive an alert similar to the following
when you try to play content that requires
QuickTime in iTunes 10.5 or later on Windows

"This movie requires QuickTime, which is not
included in this version of iTunes.
To play this movie, install QuickTime."

With iTunes 10.5 or later, QuickTime
isn't included when you install iTunes.

So I guess that's how long they've been planning this.

    Paul

This means Apple is also abandoning iTunes. Humph. Am I just
supposed to throw away my iPod, with something over 30 days' worth f
music on it?

The article says "For what it's worth, QuickTime has never played
nice with Windows 8 or 10," but that's not true. I have iTunes on my
Windows 8.1 machine at work, and it seems to work just fine. Maybe
the Register is talking about videos?

No it doesn't.

Also, I don't think Apple has said anything about not patching QuickTime
for Windows. At least, I could find anything.

The Register is a site with a long history of being anti-Apple. I
wouldn't trust anything they say.
