I found a couple goodies that way long ago. My web page is pretty basic. I
still write my own html when I want to add or change something.

Good for you. In case you don't know this, you can usually get to see
the CSS directly too via the browser by looking at the link in the
head of the HTML source and fashioning the correct direct link to
stick it in the address bar of the browser (in another tab perhaps).
Inline CSS in the HTML, of course, is visible in the HTML source but
these days most pages have external sheets.

None of that is necessary when you can simply click the CSS file in the
sidebar of the Safari inspector window (the same one used to view source).
Linked JavaScript and other files are also available there.

There are a lot of other ways of doing it too. Most things are rarely
*necessary*. When a thing is mentioned, it is not necessarily implied
there are not other ways to accomplish the same result. And, in case
you don't know this, not all Safaris have the facilities you mention.
And not all folk use Safari, even folk keeping up with the curve.
Quite often, folk are in situations without laid on facilities.

No magic solution here, there's still the question of how big to make
the cells. If the dimensions of the pics are known, the element that
contains them can be dimensioned to suit and the text can be confined
to the width of the element. The element could be a TD in a table or
it could be a DIV or any number of other elements without a table.

The text does not *have* to be confined to the width of the picture.
It could be in an element of its own and dimensioned to be a guessed
reasonable percentage of the viewport and centred. All depends on the
project, whether there are many pictures, whether they are similar in
size, or even aspect ratio.

The one good thing about tables is the shrink-to-fit quality of the
cells but in this case it hardly helps if the text is so long that it
stretches the cells (you see, it's really spring-to-fit because it
will also expand to fit!). And, besides, there are ways to get the
shrink to fit quality outside tables.

Keeping things simple TextEdit still does a reasonable job just using
set tabs & margins. Then save as a PDF. everybody should be able to
read or see the damn thing regardless of the level of geek BS.

I'm sure you are right, a "reasonable job" for many values of
rationality as long as people keep away from MS Word for things like
this. Nice pic btw...

"geek BS" indeed! I exclaim in great respect because I know you are
armed. <g>

Truth is though that making web pages of pictures is a far better way
to go because of the great flexibilty the author has and, more
importantly, the viewer. The pictures, if they are of sufficient size
and quality can be dimensioned either in percentages or in character
size units or other units now and this affords fabulous distribution.
PDFs come more into their own for printing.

Like I said, styling is left as an exercise. Also, if you want to generate
the HTML with easy to use templates, you could look at solutions like
jAlbum.

You can use tables to put the text next to the images like here:

Nope. That's the sort of thing a web page is for.

The sad thing is I have video instructions for the class - and that INCLUDES
how to take screenshots on OS X and Windows (the class is for software that
does not run on Linux, so no Linux instructions).

I've encountered it in the professional graphics and printing industry
as well as in the software/hardware tech industry - both places where
you might think people would know better. : D

Yes... I get this from clients and others, too. They SHOULD know better.

"F" for failing to follow directions.

Ignorant and lazy and incapable of listening.

You too will get old. And when you do you'll fantasize that when you
were young prices where reasonable, politicians were noble, and children
respected their elders. Respect your elders.

I am more concerned about content then format of the document, but, yes, if
I had a number of these I would give one warning then take points. Maybe I
should straight from the start - this is COLLAGE after all.

Even when shown a video on how to do it correctly!

There is worse. Some people send me joke collections or photo
collections within PowerPoint presentations. Double-ugh.

Yes, I have gotten those as well. Largely from an elderly relative who gets
them from others... so just accept them.

Nice thing about OS X is QuickLook handles this well.

No temporary files manual method: hold down the Contol key while taking
the screenshot and it goes to the clipboard. Preview has a "New from
Clipboard" command, then resize, then you can copy and paste from
Preview to final destination (usually email in my case).

I do this rarely enough that I haven't bothered trying to automate it.

Why does this not surprise me?

(To my great relief, I have never needed to use Microsoft Office enough
to bother learning its idiosyncracies.)
