#1352 — iOS version questions

SubjectiOS version questions
Message-ID<iocne9$j93$1@dont-email.me>
I'm not really a Luddite, but I do tend to avoid updates that don't offer
me any visible advantages 8-)

So anyway, I haven't updated my iOS to any 4.# and now I see there's an
even later one. Am I stuck in the past? All I see on the Apple site is a
later number, not Step 1.

I've discovered there are a couple apps I wanted that demand a later one
8-(

BUT this newest one demands iTunes 10, which I've been avoiding as well,
because it has nothing useful to me except, it seems, the OS I don't have.

I've been avoiding experiments until AFTER my trip this spring, trying to
keep things simple so I can read all the way to my hotel in Aberdeen at the
end of April.

iOS updates always contain important security improvements. They are
not to be ignored.

What happens when you connect your iPad to iTunes? Under DEVICES in the
sidebar you should see your iPad. Select that and then you should see a
button under Version that says "Check for Updates".

Indeed it does.

By avoiding updates you are not keeping things simple. Just read what
you've written if you don't believe me.

Enjoy your trip to Aberdeen. I've only been there once. I loved it.

Cheers,

I agree in general but if he has an iPhone 3G I would avoid updating to
4. It could turn the phone in into a slug. The earlier versions of 4
did.

You are right. Point taken. I forgot about that. The iPod Touch 2nd
generation also suffered from this.

In this case we talked about on iPad which had no problem with iOS 4.

And my iPad has gotten better with each iOS 4 upgrade. I can't imagine
not having upgraded from 3 to 4. Multitasking alone made it like a
brand new iPad!

I took the plunge(s) yesterday afternoon. Step 1: disable the intrusive
Ping panel. Step 2: install OS4. Step 3: sync everything but iCal, which it
told me was going to make all kinds of date changes! Step 4: check paper
backup calendar. Step 5: sync again, adding the 3 errant apps(one of which
was a lemon I deleted) and iCal, which did NOT change as threatened. I have
since disabled a couple more "improvements"
3 useful things: airplane mode with icon, more apps, ability to listen to
something besides iPod app while doing something else.

Big deal?

All that hesitance, procrastinating, fretting, hemming, and hawing, just
for that, eh? Pfft...

And your response makes it *so* much less likely that anyone will ever
take your advice.

Shut the fuck up, ho. If I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you.

Wow, what a gentleman. Is it any wonder your advice is ignored?

I haven't given you any advice to ignore, Sally. Ask regular visitors
here and they will tell you I generally give decent advice that is often
appreciated. My comment above to Erilar is a sarcastic jab regarding her
silly tendency to avoid updates because of her irrational fear of them
combined with her refusal to appreciate or even learn about the benefits
of them - often to her own detriment, unbeknownst to (or probably more
accurately: unacknowledged by) her. Others here who have seen that
Erilar does exhibit those tendencies will likely appreciate my
sentiments along those lines. I frankly don't give a shit whether you
agree with my feelings on this issue. And I honestly couldn't care less
whether you take or leave my advice; but we can keep up this awfully
witty conversation of yours if you insist. Your turn.

Sometimes, you give good advice. Why do you find it necessary to attack
those like Erilar who have different ideas on what makes a useful
system, instead of just helping them do what they want to do? Sure,
pointing out the advantages of new features is fine, but the attitude is
not.

You may have the last word or not. You're in my killfile now.

Your indecisiveness might be cute if you were actually of the female
persuasion, Sally. First you say my advice is ignored. Now you say I
sometimes give good advice. Which is it?

I already told you why I made the comment I made - not that I am under
any obligation to explain myself to you. If you don't agree with my
reasoning, tough titties.

Good riddance. Bye now.

Actually, that's true, but it's not often jolly 8-)

I've had too many bad experiences with updates to accept them unwarily. I
like to control my software rather than have it attempt to control me 8-)

Take into account the fact that I got my ham licence in the '50's. There
are times when I miss vacuum tubes.

Accepting software updates doesn't necessarily commit you to control.
When you bitch and moan about problems associated with your decision to
refuse updates for lengthy periods of time, you can expect a little jab
from people like me. ; )

Actually, it's not; his advice, when he deigns to give it, is generally

sure.

Mr. Oates is quite right on both points, Mr. Fenwick. In a volunteer
forum like this, anyone is free to give advice on their own terms, and
anyone is free to refuse advice given on terms they reject. I hope you
are both in each other's killfile, so the forum can resume, now that
this housekeeping matter is settled.

Did you also notice that you can now switch from one running app to
another by double-clicking the Home button and tapping the one you want
to switch to from the panel that appears at the bottom of the screen?
That's got to be simpler than clicking the Home button and then finding
the home screen that contains the one you want to switch to.

Or AirPlay, or support in iPod for HomeSharing? Additional multifinger
gestures? Increased support for visuallly impaired? There are a lot of
little niceties that you might yet discover as you use/explore what's
there.
