I doubt it. This setting made some sense when people used phone lines to
access limited-access ISPs.

Five minutes is a perfectly reasonable interval if your accounts aren't
IMAP with IDLE support.

See above. They are pointless with modern Internet.

That would have been sensible in 1997. It is silly in 2017.
