Gmail can be a PIA since Google seems to write its own rules, favoring 
archiving over trash and junk.

I am fortunate in that Gmail is not my primary email account, so I have 
given up on using Mail to manage Gmail with OSX. When needed for my 
desktop Mac I use the browser interface.
With iOS I use Mail and I have the Gmail app installed, and that seems 
to behave logically.
