Well ... the card and contacts are clean. I removed and then inserted 
the card again. No difference.

So I downloaded the Afterburner utility and am not sure what to do with 
the info. Here is a link to a screenshot showing the program interface. 
It appears the temp runs from 41°C to 48°C ... which doesn't seem very 
high.

Any advice or something I'm missing?

And here's a screenshot of the weird lines. This is fairly tame. The 
lines flicker quite a bit on the menus but getting a screenshot is 
difficult.

What I still find odd is that the lines only occur on some menu screens 
where there is text. I never see the lines during gameplay. The 
static-like noise, however, I do see when watching WMP movies and in 
many (but not all) games. In case it is relevant, when I turn off 
'acceleration' in the MWP options so I can take a screenshot the static 
doesn't appear (but I can no longer watch movies full screen).

I need to dig deeper to find the box with my old 9800 card ... it isn't 
where I thought it was.  :\

I repeat ... pesky computers.
