Thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

Rats. I was hoping it would be something simpler.

On the weekend I will super-clean and do some testing. According to the 
Catalyst Control Centre the card is running as cool as possible (pinned 
at the bottom of the gauge) but this may not be reliable.

Worst case scenario I guess I can pull out my old 9800 GTS from storage. 
A year ago I thought my 9800 card was failing so I bought my new Radeon 
but it turned out it was my power supply was to blame so I replaced it 
with a heavy duty Corsair PS. (So I'm certain this isn't a PS issue).

Pesky computers.
