I've worked with bocked and unblocked tapes, and I know 8mm drives have to do things to make them look blocked, but on 9-track tape the blocking data is not a byte value. A data block on a 9 track tape starts with a physical sync pattern, then the data, ends with a sync pattern, and is followed by erased space before the next block. Larger blocks on tape are done by writing physically longer collections of bits between the sync patterns. How this is done got more sophisticated over the years, with 6250 BPI tapes actually recorded at about 9000 bits per inch, using the extra bits to provide the redundancy to recover from errors expected at that high a dentity.
