#4009 — Spelling reform on the keyboard?

I am a spelling reformer and a member of
http://www.spellingsociety.org/ One of the problems of spelling for
English is that we only have only 26 letters for 44 sounds. One of the
things we do is to use two letters together to write one sound, eg
'th' for the teeth on tongue sound in "the". The trouble with that we
sometimes want to use them to sound separately, as in "foothold". So
we need more letters, handwriting is not a problem, we can all learn,
the big obstacle is mechanised text, and here technical progress has
been in favour of reform, there are more letters, with unicode
codings. All modern screens and printers will show and print these
characters. We cannot let a subsequent text editor combine t + h to
give Þ unless it has a great deal of knowledge of what is and is not
corrent, in effect a spell-checker. How can we produce them on a
qwerty keyboard?

On possibility is to re-map the keyboard, as is done for German and
the Scandinavian languages. How easy is it to produce such a
re-mapping in way that can be supplied to users? There seems to be a
limit to the number of new letters that can be produced, am I right?

Another possibility is to use two keys held down together to produce
the new letter, for example t pressed down with h produces the symbol
for the voiced th in 'the' = Þ, and d pressed down with h produces the
symbol for the unvoiced th in 'thistle' = ð. These letters exist in
both capital and small forms, Þ þ Ð ð, so capitalisation has to be
thought of. The "other" keys might be ctrl and alt-ctrl.

Spell-checkers are not a problem, they can be modified. All
dictionaries are databases recording the standard spelling of a word,
its grammatical changes (the plural form, the tenses etc), a
definition of its meaning and the pronunciation, even if they don't
show all these entries. The pronunciation can be reworked into
whatever standard has been chosen. What's needed is to reverse the
correct and incorrect, make the phonetic form correct and the standard
form incorrect.

The bottle-neck is getting it right in the first place, to produce the
new letters straight off the keyboard. What are the possibilities?

If it ain't broke don't try to mend it.

The system we have works, without having to generate all sorts of strange
characters like a lot of foreign languages have to, by putting weird
combinations of dots and ^ over their letters, so leave well alone.

I agree with Michael and wish that English spelling was phonetic, like
Welsh and other helpful languages. It would make everything so much
easier for everyone - especially, of course, foreigners!

But this isn't a computing problem, so what's the point in discussing
it here at all?

Chris.

The Welsh also use combinations of letters, compare d with dd

Americans have already gone phonetic, color for example, which has no
impact on the keyboard.

Yes, but 'd' is always pronounced 'd' and 'dd' is always pronounced as
a hard 'th' - no exceptions. Once they know the rules, anyone could
read a Welsh book out loud and Welsh speakers would understand every
word - that can't be done with English! Anyway, for those who haven't
seen it yet, this imminent piece of European legislation should give us
all hope...

EEC # 18362/351237/1.34
Brussells, 16.01.11
Subject: New European Spelling

The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement has been
reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European
communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a
five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for
short). In the first year, 's' will be used instead of the soft 'c'.
Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the
hard 'c' will be replaced with 'k'. Not only will this klear up
konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be
growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome 'ph'
will be replaced by 'f'. This will make words like 'fotograf' 20 per
sent shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling
kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are
possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters,
which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre
that the horible mes of silent 'e's in the languag is disgrasful, and
they would go. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such
as replasing 'th' by 'z' and 'w' by 'v'. During ze fifz year, ze
unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou', and similar
changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis
fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibil riten styl. Zer vil be no mor
trubils or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech
ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru.

That's frightening. Read something similar in my yoof... Reader's Digest
Junior Treasury, I think. Called Kaos in Ce Klasrum or some such.

But Michael, it seems, wouldn't be happy with that either. He would want a
seperate symbol to replace dd, hence his need for a new keyboard!

May I carrect ye dait? It was 2011-4-1.

I'm always amused that the obsolete OldEnglish letter "thorn" (= "th")
is still mistaken for Y in "Ye olde teashoppe".

If a (paid-for) new keyboard for distribution is seriously required,
your man is at EFF, catering for RISC OS & Microsoft.

Personally I think Webster has a lot to answer for, without further
(farther?) muddying the water.

OldEnglish?? Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic/Norse, surely.

> is still mistaken for Y in "Ye olde teashoppe".

I'm a bit bemused by Martin's observation that þ and ð are standard
Latin-1 characters. There have been claims that the Runic alphabet was
derived *from* Latin. And as for Chris's Subject: New European Spelling, I
hope that's a joke. Let's get the Euro zone economy right before they
tackle really difficult stuff like spelling. I don't know, what are we
coming to. 8-)

Why don't you try "Kansas" vs "Arkansas"?

How to get different characters from a standard keyboard *is* a
computing problem.

Last time I looked there were quite a few more people around who
wanted to type text in languages other than English, and they all have
the same problem.

Whether you want to type text in Icelandic or in a newly invented
spelling for English does not make any difference, the requirements
are the same.

Indeed. Whilst my BB works fine with a Norwegian USB keyboard (with the
exception of the @ symbol which is "Alt-Gr 2" but that is another
problem all together), and on my Iyonix, æ and ø are just an Alt click
away å is a bit more problematic on a RISC OS machine. It requires me to
remember Alt 229 and Alt 197. Then there are Swedish "umlauts" to deal
with every now and again (just read the post from Mr Hafter about how
to deal with umlauts in RISC OS. Thanks!).

I also use MacOSX and Linux computers to write Norwegian emails, both
have their own way of dealing with such characters. My Win 7 PC at
work has a Norwegian keyboard, but as yet I have not taken the time to
find out how to get a "ä", "Ö" or and "é" out of it let alone a "£"
sign.

Oh and my Linux netbook has a UK keyboard whilst my Macbook has
US keyboard.

Cheers
Stan

Not at all: Alt-. followed by a (or A).
Here, watch: å! And again: å.
Easy, really.

Ah... you mean "Alt . a". That must have been the only combination I
didn't try after reading the other post. Not sure how I missed it.

Or on this french imac keyboard "Alt : q" gives å
Not in common use in East Lancashire or in
this part of France. But I do like to see these characters
and wonder how they're pronounced.

The letter Å in Norwegian is pronounced half-way between the vowel in
"hole" and the vowel in "haul", and there is a great deal of
variation, not just regional variation, but also when a speaker
repeats the same word in the same sentence. Nobody speaks or hears
with perfect accuracy, it is part of learning a language to know the
*range* of sounds which count as "the same".

gives you an idea of how Norwegian vowels sound. You can also search the
net for sites that provide sound files of Norwegian pronunciation.
