And there are the same options in StrongED (menu over a window in
TaskWindow mode).

I had a looka at my battery in my RISC PC a month ago. It was crusted in white, with green corrosion on the motherboard! I took the motherboard out and unsoldered the battery. I cleaned up the motherboard with iso-propyl alcohol, and soldered in a Maplins 2/3 AA tagged NiMH battery (Number VN25 costing about £3) When I turned the computer on, it said it was midnight on January 1st 1900! I reset the date and time, and turned the computer off, and on again. To my great relief, it had remembered everything. Alan Griffin

Your expansion ports are all on the back, yes? If you have a SCSI card,
or scanner interface, or MIDI card, etc etc, all of these appear on the
back of the computer.
With me so far?
Well, on the OTHER side of the expansion port is a circuit board that is
something like 12-15cm in length.
Here's some really lame ASCII art:
Video Serial Etc Expansion ports
.-----------------####--####--####--============--------.
| Back of computer | | | |
| |Expansion | | P s |
| |card | | o u |
| |(aka | | w p |
| | "podule")| | e p |
| | | | r l |
| | | | y |
| '--######--' | |
| Backplane is here --> ---######--- | |
| '------|
| |
| Front of computer |
'-------------------------------------------------------'
Does this make more sense now?
Best wishes,
Rick.

Once I switched the dispaly to a monospaced font. :-) Seems to be a nomenclature problem. It is not at all clear why something something much closer to the front of the computer than the back should nevertheless have the word 'back' in its name. I had never thought about this before - but if asked, I would have assumed that the backplane was the piece of metal etc which Rick labelled 'Back of computer' - the bit I plug keyboard/monitor/mouse/printers into. I stand corrected! -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

It's the plane onto whoch the backs of the podule Eurocards plug. It also
happens to be a standard term for a PCB doing what the RiscPC backplane
does, in any equipment rack.

These things are *attached* to the motherboard. It's a pain, for sure. > Will my PC place be able to do this for me? Depends. If your PC place is shiny gloss and salesmen wearing suit and ties, keep on walking, those people are unlikely to have ever held a soldering iron in their lives. If your PC place is run by a scruffy bloke that talks in run-on sentences, has piles of circuit boards on the counter, and the place seems in total disarray (it isn't, a trained geek will know exactly what's going on), then you've found somebody competent. Failing that... you're changing a *battery* in a computer. A TV repair guy ought to be more than capable. Best wishes, Rick.

There certainly used to be a firm like this in the back streets of Whitehaven, but I have not looked (or needed to look) for a few years. When I went in some years ago trying to find a parallel cable they did give me a slightly funny look, before saying 'no', but the last time I was in looking for an ethernet cable they charged me far less than I expected, so they must be OK in some areas. I am not sure if my next-door neighbour, who does know his Windows software stuff goes as far as weilding a soldering iron - must ask. (If you ever do need Windows support, Chris, let me know and I can put you in touch with him...) > Failing that... you're changing a *battery* in a > computer. Hehe, even *she* caught that one, but in a female way she tactfully rolled her eyes and said nothing. Didn't buy either. Best wishes, Rick.

I might try that technique next time I'm in PC World. That'll really get
them worried.

My PC place, smartish but individually owned, did it for me and emailed: ."..have fitted the battery and now get no picture on a standard PC monitor. " Hope this isn't a major problem .... I use one of those flat screen PC things. I'll fetch it back tomorrow and see what happens.

Of course, the CMOS has been powered down and has lost /all/ your settings! If you saved them as advised, restoring them will be simple. Otherwise it'll be a bit of command line stuff to get things back working properly. I'd start with configuring the hard disc to boot after doing a Ctrl/Delete power on to restore factory defaults. Even if you type it blind, F12 then configure boot [Return]. You may have to do configure drive 4 first. If restarting gets a display, status [Return] at the F12 prompt will give you loads of other stuff to check. John -- John Williams, Brittany, Northern France - no attachments to these addresses! From RO 3.5 and above a hard drive is assumed so these are the defaults. -- David Holden - APDL - <http://www.apdl.co.uk>
