Hi, After the problems with my RiscPC, I'm building one back to how I had it before. Is there any speed (or other) advantage to having the main Hard Disc 4 connected via my Unipod as opposed to the main mother board? I looked in Archive for an article about the Unipod and any comparative data but couldn't find one. I posted on Archive-on-Line as well to see if anyone there has thoughts. Regards,

I have been using 2 hard disc on one of the IDE ports of my UNIpod for several years with no problems whatever. Yes, possibly. > I have been using 2 hard disc on one of the IDE ports of my > UNIpod for several years with no problems whatever. I had one on one port & the back-up caddy on the other. Worked perfectly here too (until recently). I was just wondering what the advantage was. Now I know from Dave Holden's posting what the actual speed improvement should be. > Brian.

Hi all, Posting this to comp.sys.acornmisc & Archive on Line I've got a RiscPC working after a fashion. Lots of things are working. It boots up OK (apparently). The Unipod seems to be working and I can access drives as before. I've installed Adjust 4.39 fron the CD & that appeared to go OK. Networking is OK & I can access the internet. USB seems to work & I can access pendrives. Many apps work correctly but there are a series of faults which baffle me. I have no idea if it is one thing at fault causing all these problems or several... Paint reports.. This version of Paint needs Colour Picker 0.46 Verma reports ColourPicker 0.47 in ROM is dormant but there is no Colour Picker in RMA to replace it. Despite my downloading Netsurf & the relevant bits again it still suffers fatal errors or locks up. System variable not found - USBDeviceDriver$Path (internal erro code 120) I ran an old memory test program but it can only test memory in the NEXT slot up to 28MB but anyhow it gave a series of fail errors in th form... Memory test failed Phase 1 fail at &00ABB430 with &98612D2D instead of &B8612D2D There were &00000053 failures in total On shutdown I got Application may have gone wrong. Clicking 'Describe' gets 'Internal error: abort on data transfer at &00012000' any other choice causes the Task Manager icon to disappear & have to power off to shut down (F12 doesn't work). Shift + Power on to by-pass boot gives... Error: Internal error: No stack for trap handler : Internal error . abort on data transfer at &03A3F pc = 23A3F77C: Registers at 00012358 (error number &800E07) However I can do * Desktop & get to desktop. Can access both hard drives OK. If anyone can shed a glimmer of light.... Regards,

That's what I suspected. What's the BEST way to clean contacts? A solvent, wire wool...???? Could a ribbon cable fault caused the RAM not to be accessed properly? C32 ?? Could you enlighten the ignorant please? Many thanks, -- Chris Newman

A contact cleaner you'll find in Maplin - or a decent car spares place.
Don't use an abrasive as this could ruin the gold plated contacts.

I've got naptha & isopropynol. The reference to wire wool was, I admit, a bit facetious. Cheers, -- Chris Newman

I've got naptha & isopropynol. I rather doubt that you have isopropynol. ;-) There is only one way to put an -ol onto propyne, and I imagine it would tautomerise to acrolein anyway. And acrolein is one of the most unpleasant chemicals I have ever had to handle. Acrid, which is presumably the derivation of the name, barely scatches the surface of how unpleasant it is... -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

I'd guess it is IPA (Iso Propyl Alcohol) - that was once a very common
contact cleaner.

I wonder how many people actually talk about propan-2-ol rather than isopropanol or even isopropyl alcohol. I would expect people to write propan-2-ol, as it is the official name, and also takes up less space. IUPAC names can be taken too far. Must use my spell checker & try not to post quickly just before dashing out to a gig in haste. Just to clarify...... Propan-2-ol is also known as Isopropyl Alcohol (abbr. IPA - not the beer!), Isopropanol & 2-propanol. Mine is manufactured by Servisol & is available from Maplins in a one litre can labelled IPA isopropanol & a 400ml spray container labelled IPA 170 Isopropyl Alcohol. Naptha refers to a range of hydrocarbons distilled from pitch or petroleum. Apparently even the Persians & Greeks could do that (Clever bods). The Naptha I use is a very light, clear fraction of the distillate that's sold to clean oil & grease from brake linings. It seems to be inert to most plastics & paints which makes it good for de-greasing. Clear as mud then!!! -- Chris Newman

Think it's very similar to cigarette lighter 'petrol'. Which is handy to
have as a cleaning fluid, and easy to get.

I understand the Persians do nuclear too, though the Greeks can't afford
that at the moment.
