#4990 — RISC OS emailing

Over the past few weeks I have suffered a number of what can only be
described as serious problems with emailing using RISC OS.

For a couple of weeks, Pluto - my chosen program for years - has been
throwing up error message when I try to open freshly debatched messages
eg.

20 Apr 00:22:23 100 Title : Error from Pluto
20 Apr 00:22:23 100 Task : Pluto
20 Apr 00:22:23 100 Message : Index may be corrupt at article
11/&2a40. Please try running 'Articles->Repair' from Pluto's icon bar
menu.
20 Apr 00:22:23 100

The references to the corrupt article varied every time this happened.

I could find no way of fixing this; running 'Articles->Repair' or in this
case 'Articles->Repair/Compact' excised a number of suspect articles
(those most recently debatched) but fixed nothing in that a subsequent
click on an article produced a similar error message relating to a
different article.

Using menu item 'Misc->Compile references index appears to rediscover
those files previously removed but any attempt to read them produces the
same error messages as before.

As I am writing this messages from Pluto keep popping up reporting that a
file may be corrupt eg.

Card file does not match article file 45...

Is my copy of Pluto corrupt? Or have I missed something essential?

IIRC one thing you might try (but make a backup of the whole app first) is
to delete the Cards file, when Pluto is not running, of course. I think
that causes Pluto when next started to create a brand new Cards file by
scanning all the Article files. (Cards is the index.)

Jeremy, many thanks for this. I shall file it for future reference... For
now I have followed Dave Symes's recommendation to move a load of old
stuff into external boxes and this seems to have done the trick.

The very first question that needs asking when Pluto gets uppity is How
big has it grown?

Icon bar Menu-Statistics.

Pluto is generally a very stable app and good at repairing itself, however
once it grows past a certain size, and it varies with different computers,
Pluto starts to get uppity.

There are two solutions.
1) Create external boxes and move old stuff out of Pluto itself into these
external boxes.

2) Prune/dump any ancient stuff not really required

Personally I use the External boxes method and three times a year I move
stuff out of Pluto and into the external boxes.

After that, if the Garbage statistics are still up, I Run then Quit Pluto
a few time to excise some of that.

After that's done, if Pluto is still uppity, time to ask more questions.

Jeremy's suggestion is a next good step if you still have problems.

My first thought too.

I do it whenever I think there are too many messages in an internal box,
say more than 2-3000. My external boxes currently amount to 2.9G

I have noted that solution too.

A problem I have is to be a seperate thread (In c.s.a.apps).

Far too big, Dave. I had totally forgotten that my emails expire to an
archive box and that for some reason that archive is set to be hidden
(don't ask, I don't know). It contained 25,000+ messages including
attachments and contributed to the following stats:

> Icon bar Menu-Statistics.
Articles 34151 Mbytes
Used 1076.81 Mbytes
Garbage 1.43 Mbytes

> Pluto is generally a very stable app and good at repairing itself,

That seems to have been the case here.

Done.

Stats now down to:
Articles 14352 Mbytes
Used 235.16 Mbytes
Garbage .41 Mbytes

> After that's done, if Pluto is still uppity, time to ask more questions.
All signs of uppityness have gone, for now anyway.

> Jeremy's suggestion is a next good step if you still have problems.
I'll bear that in mind.

As always, many thanks for pushing me in the right direction
