Agreed. Your posting referred to 'all these apps are on borrowed time
and could be just as easily be broken by updates to RISC OS 6'. All I
meant to indicate that for me such an occurrence would be disastrous -
it does assume that I would be using RISC OS 6 which at present I
don't but I have been known to purchase a machine with a later OS
version once in a blue moon. We have probably misunderstood each
other.

At first I'd assumed this was an ARM7 problem but it now seems it's the OS. Stuff which worked perfectly on an Iyonix with 5.16 doesn't with 5.18. -- David Holden - APDL - <http://www.apdl.co.uk>

Well I think it is more precise than that as things seem to break at
some point have changes introduced post 21st Nov 11 5.17 development.
Indeed chnages introduced at that stage cause issues with Schema 1.21
and EasyFontPro 5.11.
It could be that the changes corrected previous broken code that these
programmes used or they relied upon or the OS now has broken code but
until someone with the source code to those programmes checks what is
going on then we are all speculating.
I have sent a bug report in to the APDl email address but perhaps it
is caught up in any spam filters as I haven't heard back yet.
I'd be more than willing to pay for an update to either program if
they need altering though I guess it comes down to economics for APDL

Indeed. But let's not forget that similar problems (with other software)
have affected those who keep up to date with the latest RISC OS 4/6
developments from ROL. That was precisely my point before: any OS
development risks breaking some applications, and if those are moribund then
there isn't anything which can be done to resolve it.
The solution is either to give up on developing both RISC OS 5 and RISC OS
6, or to try and ensure that wherever possible users are running software
which can be updated.

Well that also assumes we have users willing to update which is most
likely why we are where we are with RISC OS and it's applications.
RComp are doing a great job offering hardware and software updates
that take advantage of that new hardware like Musicman2 , FireWorkPro
etc and other developers are helping as well but it needs users to be
willing to either support or pay for upgrades to keep up the momentum.

People are not going to upgrade applications if the upgrade does not offer them anything useful, and with the small user base that we have, it can, I imagine, be difficult to find improvements that are useful to enough users to make the work of upgrading worth while. For example, I have upgraded Easiwriter six imes over the years, but I did not pay for the last upgrade, because it offered *me* nothing useful. I assume others found aspects of the upgrade extremely useful, though. If the next upgrade offers me anything useful, then I shall buy it. Of the other applications important to me, I had to upgrade Pipedream so that it would run under RO 4, I took upgrades of Pluto as long as they were forthcoming. I would pay a significant sum of money if there were a major upgrade to Pluto so that it would handle all the increasingly common varieties of e-mail, but that is never going to happen. NetSurf is useful, but not important, and I would not use it as a browser for anything critical. I do use it, in conjunction with Edit, for adapting web pages, though. For what I need a Spreadsheet for - addition, subtraction, multiplication and the occasional IF, Pipedream is more than adequate, though its main use is for documents that can also do arithmetic. The only paid for software I have are RiScript, which has a) died and b) been superceeded by Ghostscript and Masterfile, a fairly basic flat file database - for me, a glorified address book. Otherwise, there is simply nothing else that I need, or even want. I just had a look at R-Comp's site to be certain, and there was absolutely nothing of interest to me there. There is nothing paid for on my windows machines either. Sorry, but there is no way I can keep software writers in business, and I suspect that that may true of a number of others. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

The trouble with this attitude is that it also flows over into the Free/P.D. area and because people are not going to try out new software the writers of such get discouraged. [Snip Russell's minimalist list of software.] What no Organizer, Locate, SparkFS or BookMaker? Applications I would have thought essential on any RISC OS version. Well Zap v1.48 seems to come with the ARMini on RO 5.17 and now 5.18
Mind you I don't normally it.

The dozen or so bookmarks I have in NetSurf are easily dealt with in a linear file. And to be honest, I much prefer Firefox's abilities to put little buttons on a tool bar which gives me drop-down bookmarks. Rick Murray mentioned ArcFax. Yes I have that, and used to use it on a daily basis. But it (or maybe my fax modem) does not seem to like a lot of modern fax machines and it ceased to be practical. Related to that, I also have a paid for Viewdata emulator, which was fine, and again used to be in regular use, but these days viewdata based booking systems have largely been replaced by web based systems. If you go back and read my original comments, you will see that I have upgraded Easiwriter frequently. I have no need for a DTP package, and I have managed so far with using a text editor for web pages, though I have often thought about buying WebWonder. > > Locate I have, and used a few days ago, and thanked the > > author for it at the time. > Think of how much earlier you could have thanked him if > you hadn't waited so long to try it :-). As posted elsewhere just last week, creating an archive is something I would do about once every three years; I use Infozip for that. > > BookMaker? Oh, I also have Nuke to properly delete files that people send by e-mail with confidential information in - usually credit card data. > > The dozen or so bookmarks I have in NetSurf are easily > > dealt with in a linear file. No. All booking confirmations are Pipedream documents. Other invoices are either produced using an old program originally written for the BBC, or are Easiwriter documents. Pipedream is also used for working out prices and calculating capital allowances for income tax. Booking details are filed and interrogated by using my own BASIC programs I wrote for the BBC. VAT accounts and calculations for the Tour Operators Margin Scheme VAT are done with programs I wrote for the BBC in COMAL. Address lists are kept in Masterfile, which I bought. Documents that are given to customers are also all Easiwriter documents, and so are all my order forms. Some admin documents are done in Draw. The only exception is my booking forms, which were created using ClarisWorks - originally a Mac program, but then also released in a PC Version. [I was told many years ago at an Acorn Show in Harrogate, when the Risc PC was launched, that Claris offered Acorn the source code for ClarisWorks too, but they turned it down and went ahead with Advance(?) instead. If an Acorn ClarisWorks had been available, I would have bought that, but then might well not have Easiwriter.] All e-mail is in Pluto - except when away from the office, when I use ClawsMail on a PC netbook or the e-mail facilities on my Nokia 9300i. There is no e-mail software installed on my desktop PC. Any e-mails that I send from netbook or mobile and need to keep are imported into Pluto once back in the office. The RPC's hard disc is backed up at the end of each working day onto another, networked, RPC uing SyncDiscs. In the olden days I used Hard Disc Companion. The PC is used as described above, and also for Deutsche Bahn's rail and bus timetable software (not available for any platform other than Windows), for a magazine cover disc version of Quicken I use to keep my accounts and for another cover disc program I use to reduce that size of digital photos I am given on CD from several MB to a size suitable for pictures on webpages. The only important data on the PC is the accounts data files, which are backed up to a USB stick, to my dropbox storage, and to a PC partition on the RPC. Open Office on the PC is used to read .docx word files that I get sent by e-mail. They get changed to .doc files which I can then import into Easiwriter. Losing the PC would be a nuisance. Losing the RPC would be a disaster, if it were not backed up routinely onto a second RPC (kept in another room) which I could have up and running on my desk in 5 minutes if I needed to - as indeed I did about six years ago when the PSU in the one then on my desk suddenly went belly up. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

I suspect either 1 (Printout.) or 3 (Text,RTF,Word or Html.) as unless you have a very small RISC OS/EasiWriter using customer base the recipients would not be able to read an EasiWriter document. Of course the 'modern' way to do it - on the hotel chain websites and plane tickets - is to email a pdf file to a customer and tell them to print it themselves and take the printout with them. Showing a barcode on the screen of a mobile phone has been a standard for rail tickets since 2008. My local operator - Chiltern Railways - even has several apps for that. -- Tim Hill of timil.com . . . * supports TFT & shares in cheaper ethical telecoms http://tjrh.eu/phone * has a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ * accepts incoming email: substitute postmaster@ for tim@ ...
