anyone know if there is a problem with freelists.org?

I posted to artworks@freelists.org some 24 hours ago and it has not

This one?

http://www.freelists.org/post/artworks/problem-with-printing-and-transparency

It's already been answered, so the problem is likely to be between Freelists
and your incoming email feed.

That's interesting - I haven't seen anything in the ArtWorks list for
weeks or even months. Better do some checking. The Pilling list on
Freelist seems fine.

I've had delays receiving messages from the Iyonix Support list which
is also hosted by FreeLists. One message I sent stalled between
FreeLists and Plusnet (as shown in the headers) for more than 16
hours.

It's unpredictable. For example, your message to the ArtWorks list
appeared on the Plusnet mail server in less than three minutes.

The common factor appears to be FreeLists.

I have posted to the artworks list again but it has not shown up in my
reader.
Nothing has appeared on my PS3 or AOL lists for a long time.

I am not sure how to proceed. Freelist accepts my posts and other
people see them. It reports my status as "ECHOPOST".

Is it possible that my service provider is blocking them as spam?

I see you are using Orpheus. The Archive-on-line mail list has been
losing posts if you are a plusnet customer because the plusnet spam
filter objects to the orpheus mail servers. I wonder if this is a
more general problem.

It happens even when Orpheus isn't involved.

On 2nd March I saw a post to the Iyonix Support list from another
Plusnet user delayed by about seven and a half hours. That's Plusnet
-> FreeLists -> Plusnet (Force9). The headers showed the post was
held up at FreeLists.

Yes, but if PlusNet are holding mail off because they think it's potentially
spam, that exactly what the headers *will* show: a delay at the previous
point in the delivery route.

This is quite a common spam-filtering technique known as "Greylisting":
refuse the first delivery attempt and wait for the sender to try again.
Spammers generally don't, while other systems usually hold off for varying
periods to allow any possible network issues to be resolved before
re-sending.

I have seen significant delays recently with FreeLists posts and I use
PlusNet. FreeLists do offer a 'Recent Posts' page and RSS feeds which
can be used to show if posts are being delayed.

If PlusNet's Cloudmark anti-spam is the problem, and I am not (yet)
persuaded that it is but I have done it anyway, then white-listing
should help.

Looks like the holdup is at freelists. Allowing for the time zone
difference it is about 50 mins.

To me it looks more like Plusnet is greylisting mail from FreeLists.

No, it looks as if the holdup is sending the mail from Freelists to Plusnet.
Greylisting at Plusnet still looks like a definite possibility.

It's a pity that it doesn't show explicitly by indicating the
greylisting in the headers. Googling for 'email' 'greylist' 'headers'
suggests that some systems do that.

I've whitelisted the domain @freelists.org in my email settings with
Plusnet, but it's too soon to tell if that will solve the problem.

Evan.

However, that wouldn't explain why John doesn't see his own posts,
where Plusnet isn't involved.

I saw that one after a delay of about 28 minutes as this snippet from
the headers shows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Received: from turing.freelists.org ([206.53.239.180])
by avasin12.plus.net with Plusnet Cloudmark Gateway

Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1])

ESMTP id 8B1BAE9FB82;
	Sun, 4 Mar 2012 16:36:22 -0500 (EST)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Again, it seems that the delay is down to FreeLists.

I get the same status report. So far, every message has eventually
arrived here in spite of some being delayed.

That could be, if you're not receiving them at all. I think the only
way to find out would be to take it up with their technical support.

A post from Nick k has come into the ArtWorks list this morning, but
no sign of any earlier posts.
