#3212 — BB CMOS change

FromPatric <patric@invalid.de>

SubjectBB CMOS change
Message-ID<op.v7ke8hgseksv19@aristide.fritz.box>
Dear list

having upgraded my BB with R-Comp's latest ROM I'm a bit puzzled what
the CMOS file actually does and how it works. I never fitted the RTC
battery (and don't plan to do so either as it would mean paying somebody
to have it done).
Previously used a ROOL ROM dating back to February 2011, long
before the CMOS change hence my question.

The CMOS file on the SD card is the equivalent to CMOS RAM in an older
machine. It stores settings that you need at start-up, filesystem, boot
drive, etc.

Grahame.

Hi,

I don't think it looks after things like mouse, k/b, sound, screen blanker,
etc. though (please correct me if wrong as it doesn't seem to for me).

When I first got my BB, I wrote a little workaround (until a full fix is
available) to get this stuff to be remembered and reinstated at boot-up.
It seems to work OK with all issues of Beagle ROM to present time.

You might want to try it.

http://hd-audio.orpheusweb.co.uk/downloads/bb_cmos.zip

Settings are stored inside the small application when shutting down and are
reinstated at boot-up.

Cheers
Howard.

Howard, you are a long way behind the curve. If you install a
recent BB ROM image, you'll find it supports "CMOS RAM" functionally
identically to a machine that has real CMOS RAM.

Dave I've just installed the latest ROM and HardDisc4 components from
the ROOL site. Can I confirm that if I set........
1. Parameters in Boot.Configuration
2. Click Menu button over Configuration window and select Save CMOS
that on re-cycling power then configuration will be remembered.

Sorry Fred - I forgot to thank you for your response.

I'm still having problems saving the CMOS configuration settings. Having
re-read the thread again there appears to be a problem where the latest
ROM may be ignoring the CMOS file on SDcard.

As a temporary measure until the EEPROMs arrive, I'm using Howard Dawson's
!BB_CMOS app which is tucked away in Tasks.

I think there's confusion in that the ROM under discussion isn't the latest
release by ROOL but an intermediate release by Rob Heaton. I'd been holding
onto the October release as it seemed ok but didn't save CMOS. I'm staying
with Rob's for the time being as it's no worse and there's been issues
reported of the December release.

All seems to work OK here with the latest ROOL image (22 Dec 2011) on a
BB-xM, and with !BB_CMOS now removed completely.
Everything altered from default seems to be remembered over both resets and
power-downs.

Howard.

I think I'm getting confused. OK Howard I agree with you......

If I change the configuration in the normal way (example Network >
Internet > Enable TCP/IP) settings will be remembered on re-boot/power
cycling. The save CMOS option in the Boot configuration does nothing as
far as I can tell. Likewise !BB_CMOS has been completely removed.

Currently my Beagleboard has been updated with ROM 5.17 (22-Dec-11) and
the !Boot program 5.17 (the one downloaded in October 2011).

The ROM version can be determined simply by clicking Menu-button over
the Task manager icon and selecting Info but how do I determine the date
of the Boot program? the downloads section on the ROOL site quotes a
date but is there anyway of checking this once the update has been done?

I've tried using the latest Boot program, vers. 5.17 (22-Dec-11) but
there are odd things happening with it like configuration changes
can't be saved, no highlight on some filer windows and un-commanded
RAM disc appears on iconbar containing various directories. Like Fred
I'm sticking with the October 2011 Boot program - it seems to work
correctly.

Latest Friday 13th Jan !Boot and Hard Disc image seems to have
resolved the issues found in the 2nd Dec !Boot so give that a try.

Thanks Doug, I'll give it a try.

Thanks for that Doug - I've downloaded and updated my Boot program
from the latest version of HardDisc4 (13-Jan 2012) and everything looks
tickety-boo :-)))

I've now moved to using the December 22 ROM, deciding that saved CMOS worked
more cleanly for me and isn't giving problems. Rob Heaton's Jan ROM seemed
to be introducing problems with NetTime finding DNS in time and BB_CMOS
killing my keyboard startup fix.

I've updated the disk image, including !Boot, but did so by manually merging
rather than replacement. My disc originated from the ROOL native USB stick.
All working well & snappy.

My apologies for not answering before. TalkTalk cut off my Internet
access the day before your posting. I've only got it back today.

It looks like everybody here has most of the answers now. I think
there were some ROM versions where the CMOS save didn't work, be that
deliberate or accidental. I hope that's all fixed now.

Will be when we find out where to get the EEPROMs!

But you don't need EEPROMs. You get the functionality for free
in software and the SD(HC) card.

I thought that was changed with the latest ROM. I know you can store the
settings on the SD but I thought changes on the fly was now gone in
preparation for real EEPROM on the BB xM.
