SubjectHad a bit of fun today...

Was waiting in for the post today when the phone rang. Obviously a call
centre by the accent. Would normally just put the phone down, but played
them along since I was killing time. It was the site where they tell you
that you've got a virus, etc.

Telling them I was using Oregano 1 as a browser didn't put them off, and I
went to their site and downloaded their prog, which I presume shows you
all the viruses you have. Real or imagined. When asked to run it I read
out the 4.39 error message. Got passed on from the salesman to a 'senior
technician'. Who took me to a different site and another download. I read
out the same error message to him. After some more faffing about and me
acting even more concerned, he passed me on to the chief technician. Who
sounded English, with a very posh accent. Repeated the whole thing again,
and he still hadn't the sense to ask what operating system I was using.
After near half an hour the doorbell went so I asked them to hang on while
I signed for the post I'd been waiting for. And he did. I then asked them
if their prog was designed to run on RISC OS. He didn't know what I was
talking about so I cut off the call and went out. With a pleasant feeling
having wasted their time instead of the other way round.

[Snip Story]

There was a thread about this on uk.telecom recently.

One suggstion was, when they ask for payment, to ask if they
took luncheon vouchers.

Me too! I asked them to wait while I booted my computer ... some time
later ... then they asked me to click on the Start icon icon bottom
left... I said the icon bottom left was a disc icon ... took them some
time to ask what OS I had ... also never heard of RISC OS.

And during this I was using RO quite happily as normal, and using a
speaker-phone to give suitable concerned replies!

Should be a competition for length of their time wasted! I only managed
about 7 minutes.

The same thing happened to me last week. I kept them on the phone for
over half an hour. They didn't believe me when I said there was no
green "Start" at the bottom left of the screen, or that there was no
key in between Crl and Alt! They asked if I had "Windows" and I said
that my computer had Windows while Microsoft were still using DOS!

I too got passed to more and more senior engineers, who were not
intelligent enough to guess, when I read out the error messages when I
double-clicked on their programs, that I had a different OS!

Eventually I had to tell them that I used RISC OS and they then left me
on hold while presumably they looked it up on Google. They then came
back and apologised for troubling me!

I must get a couple of these a month. The first time I dragged it out
as long as possible to see what they were up to. I learned that in
Windows .INF files are 'Internet Notorious Files'! As I had so many my
computer was apparently badly affected. Eventually he transferred me to
a specialist who confirmed the various problems again (warnings and
errors in the event log, .INF files, etc.) and asked me to go to a
website to download some software (remote access client) which I refused
to do before explaining that I was a Microsoft trained IT consultant and
I knew it was a scam - he complained that I was wasting his time and
should have told him earlier that I knew what was going on! :)

I've done the same on many more occasions, but they are starting to
notice when you are too quick at responding to their questions. One
told me that I sounded intelligent and wanted to know what I did for a
living. Once I said IT he hung up straight away, so the trick is to
sound baffled and react slowly to their instructions if you want to make
them waste their time.

The one this morning got a slightly shorter response - "I know it's a
scam so **** *** (alternate wording for 'go away')" as I couldn't be
bothered.

Grahame.

They ought to be familiar with that one by now. I used that
ploy on them (accurate at the time, though not today) and I
know others have too.

[Snip]

> Eventually I had to tell them that I used RISC OS

I have told them that at the start, when I wanted to annoy
them rather than keep them hanging on, and it always
confuses them. They kept on assuming that it was MacOS or
Linux, and kept asking which one.

Next time perhaps I should say Commodore or Atari.

Another thought I just had; when they ask you to download
something, tell them you are on dialup and ask then for a
credit card number that you can charge the cost of the call
to. No doubt they have plenty of stolen card data at their
fingertips.

I once had a supposed finance company which was desperate to make me a
loan to buy a new vehicle, and I agreed to answer their questuions as
they filled in an application form on my behalf. Questions like 'What
model would you like?' and 'How much does it cost?' to which I answered
'Holdsworth Mistral' and '£1500', and so on, but I refused to give them
my bank details. It was a long time before they realised that the new
vehicle I wanted was a bicycle - they withdrew their offer!

Usually I just put the phone on Speaker and Mute and let them deal
with a silent answer.

This week I answered and asked what they wanted (as if I didn't know)
and when they said "Is your computer getting slow to start?"
I said No, my computer starts within Two Seconds. Cry of disbelief and
asked for answer again. After several attempts the 'Innocent?' young
lady said "I think you are playing with me" and hung up.
[I rever actually LIED to them, I've still got a BBC B]

Previously when I answered and Windows was mentioned I said I was sick
of being called as all my windows were fully double glazed !

Are we trying for the record in wasting their time and 'phone money?

When confronted with someone obviously from a call centre in Asia who
says his name is 'Malcolm' I used to tell them they are wasting their
time because the name is obviously a lie and I would never do business
with a company who asks its staff to lie. This is usually greeted with a
long silence and a click. :-)

These days, time is too short so I check CLI for 'Unknown' or 'Withheld'
and don't answer. Anyone important can leave a message, sales drones tend
not to bother, thankfully.

Given that police and local authority advice is to do this to stop being
bothered by nuisance calls they make me laugh as they withhold their own
numbers as a matter of course.

That's because, like the hospital where I worked, they're calling from

A device called TrueCall (http://www.truecall.co.uk) does all the hard
work for you. It intercepts all your calls in a very flexible way: you
can star or block numbers so they are always or never put straight
through, allow only close family to call you between 2300 and 0700,
otherwise leave a message, ask number withheld numbers to leave a
short message which you can listen to before deciding whether to take
the call, ask overseas numbers to press a randomly generated number
within five seconds, etc etc.

We do not yet have one (less than £100) but it is on our Santa List.
Anyone out there got one? Do let me, or perhaps everyone, know what it
is like.

There have been threads off and on about it on uk.telecom.

As far as I can tell it does what it what it claims to do
quite well.

To quote from the website, "trueCall is the complete
solution to all types of nuisance phone call -
telemarketing, silent calls, calls from overseas call
centres, fax calls, robocalls, market researchers, malicious
calls, misdials, wrong numbers and recorded message calls."

The trouble is, it is incapable of distinguishing between
nuisance calls from overseas call centres and real calls
from overseas friends, relatives, business partners and
customers, because BT refuse to pass on CLI from outwith the
UK on spurious data protection grounds. After all, the
mobile operators all pass on foreign CLI and have been doing
so for years, and the data protection registrar has not
complained.

Equally, it is incapable of distinguishing between withheld
CLI from nuisance callers and withheld CLI from friends and
family calling from the local hospital, or the police trying
to contact you in a possible emergency, or any number of
businesses whose switches were configured on the cheap, or
friends and family who have chosen, for whatever reason, to
have CLI withheld on their calls. No system (apart from 999
call centres and similar, which override withheld CLI) can
make this distinction. You can ask friends and family who
call you to, if necessary, prefix their calls to you with
1470 which releases the withheld CLI, otherwise you are
stuck.

The third problem it cannot cope with is the plethora of
numbers that nuisance calls present. The PPI scammers, for
example, seem to change the number presented on just about a
daily basis. That, or there are hundreds out there, all
using the same recorded announcements...

If none of the above problems concern you, then a trueCall
may indeed be what you want.

For me, it would be a liability.

Actually, if it presents an 0844 / 0845 / 0843 number, there
is a 99% chance of it being one of the host of PPI scammers.
What you get is a recorded announcement, so no point in
saying anything. I answer the phone by pressing the answer
button and get on with my work.

I may press the 5 key which transfers me to one of their
'agents' and listen to them saying 'hallo.... hallo....'

This and the SuperSaver ploy is all very well but how do you know who's
calling? I thought that caller display doesn't show overseas numbers so
you can't even guess from that - it might be nephew Jim calling from Oz to
say he's been banged up again. Or it might be the police to say that
Jim...

Most of these calls I get start by asking if I am Mr Alan Calder, which is
a clue, but this is the MO of 99% of cold calls anyway.

I just chat to them until they get bored with my cluelessness - unless I've
got something better to do of course. Or I do the counselling thing,
telling them they are working for crooks and they should get a job with
decent employers.

Cheers

Alan

I was writing above about the PPI scammers, who always
present a phone number, usually an 0844 / 0845 / 0843
number. They are delighted if you phone back because they
get a percentage of your call cost.

The computer virus scammers may or may not present a number.
020 3026 6482 is a common number that they present, and it
is a valid number.

> I thought that caller display doesn't show overseas

Correct on a BT line, it will be shown on any of the mobile
networks, and your number will be displayed in most other
countries. It is, as I mentoned earlier, down to BT
refusing to pass on CLI from outwith the UK on spurious
data protection grounds.

Again, exactly what I was saying about the downside of using
a trueCall device...
