Anyone out there got one? Do let me, or > perhaps everyone, know what it is like. There have been threads off and on about it on uk.telecom. As far as I can tell it does what it what it claims to do quite well. To quote from the website, "trueCall is the complete solution to all types of nuisance phone call - telemarketing, silent calls, calls from overseas call centres, fax calls, robocalls, market researchers, malicious calls, misdials, wrong numbers and recorded message calls." The trouble is, it is incapable of distinguishing between nuisance calls from overseas call centres and real calls from overseas friends, relatives, business partners and customers, because BT refuse to pass on CLI from outwith the UK on spurious data protection grounds. After all, the mobile operators all pass on foreign CLI and have been doing so for years, and the data protection registrar has not complained. Equally, it is incapable of distinguishing between withheld CLI from nuisance callers and withheld CLI from friends and family calling from the local hospital, or the police trying to contact you in a possible emergency, or any number of businesses whose switches were configured on the cheap, or friends and family who have chosen, for whatever reason, to have CLI withheld on their calls. No system (apart from 999 call centres and similar, which override withheld CLI) can make this distinction. You can ask friends and family who call you to, if necessary, prefix their calls to you with 1470 which releases the withheld CLI, otherwise you are stuck. The third problem it cannot cope with is the plethora of numbers that nuisance calls present. The PPI scammers, for example, seem to change the number presented on just about a daily basis. That, or there are hundreds out there, all using the same recorded announcements... If none of the above problems concern you, then a trueCall may indeed be what you want. For me, it would be a liability. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>
