The whole programme is also available as a podcast, at:

I have had a look at this using my Iyonix and Netsurf.
Signed up for an account using google and got a email to verify my
account which apparently I did.
I have been unable to get any further, being asked for a password
which I have not been given?

Can Netsurf handle this system?

An account? I don't understand. You right-click (at least in Firefox or
IE) the link to today's (The Joy of Tech) programme's mp3 file and save it,
then listen to it.

It will be no use to you unless your computer can play mp3 files, or you can
copy the file to an external mp3 player.

Possibly you've tried to subscribe to the podcast feed, that is set up your
computer to collect successive copies of successive ClickOn radio
broadcasts. (Today's programme was the last of the current series though.)

I have no idea if there's any RO software which allows one to subscribe to
podcast feeds; I use an app called "Juice" running under Windows; most
people use iTunes, but I didn't want to install that.

Given it was the last programme of the series, your best bet is just to
download the MP3 file as described. This is perfectly possible using
NetSurf: just click on the link to download it.

You can play MP3s on an Iyonix perfectly happily. I use AMPlayer:

http://www.armware.dk/files/amplayer/

I don't know whether there is a BeagleBoard compatible version anywhere: I've
not yet tested it on the BeagleBoard.

DigitalCD 3.01 seems good on the ARMini, and does play the downloaded
mp3.

http://www.riscos-digitalcd.net/digitalcd/player/intro.htm

Muggins here listened on the iPlayer through a Squeezebox and finished
up with little waits for rebuffering events. Good init!

Hmmm - I wonder if it would be possible to create a SqueezePlayer under
RISC OS...

I usually listen to my music as FLAC (lossless compression) files with
DigitalCD on the Iyonix and Beagleboard. Works well for me.

Grahame.

Some of us still have good old-fashioned steam radios, and
just turned on the radio to listen.

One of the depressing things about the broadcast was the
frequent Radio 4 tendency to assume English Education = UK
wide education.

When I last looked, just over a year ago, programming was
still very much a part of Computer Education at all levels,
including foundation level Standard Grade (sort of GCSE in
England).

I have no idea what happens in Wales or Northern Ireland,
but I suppose that if they tie their systems to GCSE, then I
guess they get the English style outcomes too.

Not a surprise. It's from London.

This was subtly satirised in that docudrama thing about a big
tsunami/flood hitting the UK from, IIRC, the North Sea. Um, ITV about
two years ago? Places in Scotland got wiped off the map. Nobody noticed.
Places in The North got wiped off the map, it was barely a newsworthy
event. London got clobbered, the world ended.

You'll see this play out again this year if there should be snow. It
will take motorway pileups and feet of snow and frozen kiddies stranded
at school to get the national news.
Or a centimetre of the white stuff "causing commuter chaos" in London.

<sigh>

Best wishes,

Rick.

Leaving aside for a minute the fact that this isn't actually true...

> Or a centimetre of the white stuff "causing commuter chaos" in London.

Population of Scotland - 5m

Population of London on working day - 12m

And given that if London is covered in snow then the rest of the south
east will be waist deep, actual affected population will be 20-25m

The difference in economic impact will be even greater.

A sense of perspective is required.

Bryan.

I think that figure may be incorrect, leading me to also wonder about the
one below.

Indeed, and perspective depends upon choice of viewpoint. From where I sit
what you say seems more doubtful. :-)

Mind you, I must confess that I much prefer life away from the crowds and
pollution of the SE of E. So I guess it suits me that so many seem trapped
down there and don't spread out here. :-)

Slainte,

Jim

It is 5.2 million see http://www.scotland.org/facts/population/

> > Population of London on working day - 12m

The residential population of Greater london is 7.83 million
see:
http://www.london.gov.uk/who-runs-london/mayor/publications/society/facts-and-figures/population

In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London
the population of Metropolitan london is estimated as between 12 and 14
million with a reference for the higher figure to
http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/gb

So Bryan's figures are in the right ball park.
