The AUTO directory has existed for as long as I can recall on my RiscPC and I *think* that until recently applications stored in it always launched automatically at boot-up without my needing to explicitly list them in "Configure > Boot > Run". I always thought it came with OS 4.39 -- in my logfile (of stuff I installed etc) I find references to $.apps.AUTO as far back as 2005. Perhaps it had some script (or a line in some other script) to make the auto-launching happen, which perhaps I have lost in my tidying-up. Or perhaps the $.Apps.AUTO idea came as part of some third-party utility. If so, can anybody recall its name or where it might have come from? Chris spotted that my original post was sent from OS 5.18. My present grand project is to get the Iyonix back into active service on the network so I can use either machine for email (in particular when Mrs N is enthroned at the RiscPC). I must have set up a directory $.Apps.AUTO on the Iyonix manually, presuming incorrectly that both branches of the OS understand it. Anyway, I've always found the AUTO folder a useful place to stash apps that I want to be on the iconbar all the time and thus don't need to appear in the iconbar Apps folder. -- Jim Nagel www.archivemag.co.uk >> "from" address is genuine but will change. website has current one.
