Happy New Year to all from a 45 deg C Australia. Phew! 

Thanks to all who replied.

Re-filetyping as fb1 didn't help.

I've solved the problem by converting them all to Armadeus files with
SoundCon.  Doesn't seem to have degraded the quality markedly.

I'll investigate on the R5 m/c when I get home. It may indeed be a R4.39
thing.
