Perhaps I should have put the smiley in a bigger font?

Of course the correct way to do things is to work with the customer to 
establish the requirements and specifications that everyone is happy 
with, and then code to those specifications.

And if it turns out that the specifications were unclear, you clarify 
them, rather than guessing.
