Actually learning C via SAS/C 6.0 on the Amiga 500 was a pain because my system was floppy disk based, and swapping floppies was error prone. So I learned C on my first PC a 486DX50 in MSDOS - via Turbo C++ 3.0 for DOS, in which that system had a hard drive. 

The same algorithm in C was shorter and faster. It was AmigaBASIC (Microsoft licensed to Commodore) that was really slow. Actually that's not right - I am comparing a 8 Mhz Amiga 500 to my 50Mhz PC - so that's the only difference I see.
