Spam is one reason. While it does not impact the regular readers much -
killfiles are still effective - it prevents new people from joining the
group because they can't see useful content between the spam.

But it is a general trend, that people prefer colorful web forums with
more or less unsuitable, at least inhomogeneous, user interfaces. The
Usenet is going to die. More and more ISPs do no longer provide a nntp
server for their customers. Only the binary group pay servers seem to
survive - for other reasons, of course.

Some forum software provide an nntp gateway. It is more or less
configured by the admin, if at all. But free forum servers prevent this
kind of access intentionally, because they can't put colorful
commercials over the nntp protocol. Furthermore the want to collect data
about their members.

In the open source community mailing lists are still common. This is
like a distributed nntp server. ;-)
