There's not a repetition that a do/while or a while loop can perform
that cannot be performed by a for loop as efficiently and as clearly.
I've not, in my life, used any loop that had a "while" in it in any of
the few languages that I programmed with. I only see the word "while" in
programming books and hear it others mentioning it. So it is not needed.
It is just another alternator doing what alternators do.

You want the block execute at least once? Make a tiny little adjustment
to your for loop! Hehe :) Who was keeping you from it that they had to
create a whole different design to exactly do the same thing and add it
to all the programming books in the world for us to see? Who needed it
that bad?

Who needs about 700 different programming languages? 2000 different same
size same specs alternators in cars? It's a syndrome. Because there's a
problem here.

although you are true - and after all what is a loop vot a condiional
and an unconditional jump. it is a lot clear to me to ahvve

while(data=get_data())
	{
  	process_data(data);
	}

for(;data=get_data();)
	process_data(data);

Really a for statement require a start point and an iteration update. If
there really isn't either handy its a bit crap;

I use whatever looks neatest and whatever I understand best.

Its a bit like saying that a case statement can be done with
if-then-else if, or a conditonal assignment be done with an if-else.
The compiler will end up producing the same code most likely, so the
only issue is speed of coding and readability.

Occasionally when I am coding code that no one else will ever see, I may
use something very terse and rather obscure.

for (; test; ) {

static int pigsFly(void) {

Congratulations! You've created a while loop assuming test is true at
the onset. When you only have a hammer...

Why would you want to use a for loop when you want block only to run once?

The ... ellipses assumed several complex blocks, one path of one which
included questioning if pigs can fly and there was no iteration such as

for (i=0; i<=number_of_pigs; i++) {
     if (!can_pig_n_fly(i) break;
}

int can_pig_n_fly(int i) {
  if (moon_is_blue && i == 13) return 0;
  return 1;
}

I'm not arguing that you can't create the equivalent of a while loop
with a for loop or that you can't use a screwdriver as a chisel.

That was determined three functions ago and passed as a parameter.

We have a programmer that pronounces parameter as para meter. 20 years
ago he may not have known the standard pronunciation; now I think he
does it because it sets one of the manager's teeth on edge.

My point is that "for loop" is a screwdriver of length 9.0 inches and
the other two "while things" are screwdrivers of 9.00001 inches and
9.00002 inches respectively :)

I don't see them as one being a screwdriver and the other a chisel at
all. All three are _practically_ EXACTLY the same screwdriver.

For loop is of course slightly easier to use when the maximum number of
iterations is known in advance. As long as the test expression is
boolian true it keeps repeating. So you are free to arrange your
condition in any manner you deem necessary without modifying the counter
variable inside the block.

This is the form of for loop that is identical to a while loop:

int i=1
for (;i<=someValue;)
{
    ....
    i++;

}

It even looks like a while loop :) But certainly works like a while loop
including the fact that in this form of for loop scope of the counter
isn't limited to the for loop block (in standard form of for loop
counter value only exists inside for loop block).

Problem with C for loop is that it is really while loop, while you
don't have real counting (range based) for loop :P

for loop does do while also easily. Pick your choice. My choice is using
standard for loop with a short if statement added at the bottom of the
block with a break. It's a do while loop now! It'll run at least once.

Cut the fucking acrobatics short. Be scientists not "engineers." :-)

Whatever... A guy I've worked with for over 20 years would write

for( i=1; i<10; i++ )

which I think is a perverted use of white space but so it goes. fwiw if
I'm working on someone else's code I try to maintain the overall style,
camel case, underbars, whatever. I do balk at misspellings though.

100% of loops in programs I wrote at work for others used just one form
of the loop. In VBA I used only For Next loops. Never looked at three or
so other forms and never needed to. The secretary who was to use them
just needed to learn For Next loops for looping.

She was picked from many! She was brilliant, it turned out (among other
fantastic features). I asked the Chinese manager how the hell he'd found
that jewel. In his peculiar Chinese accent and manner he smirked and
said all he needed was to see them perform a vlookup on Excel. The one
who knew what she was doing was chosen :-)

Those damn Chinese are like physicists. They always seek the simplest way.

Not quite the same, I don't think but I don't know Excel. Supercalc was
bundled on the Osborne and I never figured out how to use it. Still
haven't figured out it's descendants.

I've come to loathe Excel though. Too many people use it as a set of
expandable pigeonholes as documentation that has nothing to do with the
original intent.

The only reason I learned Excel was that we had to teach it in high
school :) Even their math exercises included a lot of Excel use. I just
blamed it on the times and followed the current.

But it is a useful general purpose tool for general people. For somewhat
more demanding purposes like some of the inventory control needs one can
automate a lot of stuff with its VBA. Excel itself is written in VBA.

For much more involved inventory control, Excel begins to be deficient
and much more than just a VBA programmer is needed to code that in VBA.
Companies don't do that. They go for SAP where it has combined solving
complicated physics problems with much more mundane programming to
generate any report you need no matter how involved. SAP is the best in
the world for that reason.

But this fucking Chinese company would not take advantage of that. They
were paranoid about SAP's state of the art features and had disabled it
to near death. So they looked at my background and asked _me_ to write
those difficult ones in VBA for them! Let me give you an example:

There's a flow of parts to and from a warehouse of course. Each part has
a lifetime (goes unreliable after certain period of time sitting in the
warehouse), a frequency of use (how often it leaves the warehouse), the
volume each occupies, a weight (determining which racks and how high
they should be stored), a value (determining where in the warehouse it
is stored - a caged and locked area or in general area), an ETA
(estimated time of arrival after ordered from suppliers), how often it
gets lost or stolen (i.e. how often you need to count them and where
they're stored), and so on and so on.

Now company has suffered great losses and lost great customers, and
their warehouses have limits in capacity, so it is in dire need of
knowing exactly when to order what part and in what quantities to cut
all that losses to an absolute minimum, so they wouldn't face a
situation where needed part is ordered but is "in transit", and never
have to give the parts to salvage companies because they're old, or they
go to pick it up from location and nothing is there (had not been cycle
counted with enough frequency) etc, and etc. And we're talking about
hundreds of millions of dollars here.

Each minute counts. Each second is gold.

This is the gist of just _one_ of the problems that any warehouse in the
world has. The solution for it goes beyond abilities of just a
programmer. You actually need physicists to do it. Even "Engineers" will
fuck it up for you topped with a confident smile. And it won't be about
a war that's being fought so you'd take them to a wall and shoot them
for their incompetence and fraudulent claims causing you grief.

So companies buy SAP licenses with such features added and turned on in
them, and get same results without hiring a physicist for their
warehouses! They do the logical thing to do.

Doing it with "Excel" is ridiculous. It can be done, I did it and made a
lot of money doing it. But that was not the right thing to do cause it
was already done perfectly well in SAP. For some reason obscure to me,
they just had to do the whole thing independent of their database system
in China. Each warehouse did it locally and flow of information was
always one-way. From company to their database. Never the opposite.

Don Lancaster wrote a number of books like the 'TTL Cookbook' and had
his fingers into a number of projects. His weakness was PostScript.
PostScript is in truth a programming language that is stack based and
uses reverse Polish notation like FORTH. When Lancaster got through with
it it also became a NC machine control language.
