I had a Debian install that I no longer use...
so I kept the /home partition and gave Ubuntu 11.04 a try
and sure enough Unity desktop was installed.
It had apparently kept the proprietary NVidia drivers and that worked OK

If Unity is not installed, then simply install the proprietary drivers 
and it should work


That said...I don't like it
and I am keeping Gnome
