Just for the heck of it I tried an 11.04 live cd and yep...
it went to Gnome...
I read  "About Ubuntu" and it says that Gnome is installed by default...
though when I did a Google search for "Ubuntu 11 default desktop" the 
hits I got said Unity will be the new default when it is working.

Maybe there are some bugs in it yet?
