I bought the TP-Link AX1800 WiFi router. It was easy to set up
in Linux, it provides a web link to configure the router.

What!? So far I've only seen web admin interfaces that are on LAN
addresses. Which manufacturers are doing that?

Not my own, but I've seen a Linksys mesh system that requires you to
create a cloud account, then use a mobile app to login to the cloud
configure the devices ...

My Mercusys Mesh Wifi System only has a Cloud UI.

It is irritating, but the System was cheap, the WiFi connectivity and
speed are good, and there isn't too much I need to configure or examine
for just WiFi.

I wouldn't even begin to consider using a device with Cloud UI as a
router/gateway.

I also have a WiFi switch (Shelly) with a Cloud UI, which is annoying. I
will replace it, when I can find a sensible alternative device.

No I wouldn't for myself

Can't you replace the firmware on Shelly devices with an open version?

Actually, this is misleading. The Mesh WiFi is controlled by an app on
my Android Phone. It isn't a cloud service. The phone app normally
connects to a cloud web server when I run it, but it doesn't need to. It
controls the WiFi access points via the WLAN. It also works when the
phone is cut off from the WAN/Mobile provider.

My WiFi access points are fire wall blocked from the WAN. A LAN IP can
route to the WAN through a WiFi access point, but a WiFi access point's
own IP has no external WAN access.

I guess this isn't as bad as I made it seem. Maybe they do it because it
was cheaper to develop an Android UI than it was to develop a Web UI.

Security wise, it may be no worse than a locked down local web-server
interface. I'm not smart enough to know.

Eero is the same. Their mobile app is required to manage their stuff
through the cloud. Apparently it's a feature in some people's eyes.

Most WiFi momes/routers have an inbuilt 'website' which allows tou select
what it is you want to configure, both LAN and other stuff like the WiFi with
various GUI 'pages' or tabs.

That allows you to set up things like the WiFi Server name (SSID) that you
see when you run something like your Network Manager to select the WiFi
Sserver you want out of the dozen or so in the nearby locality. And also the
security password to keep undesirables out.

You can restrict who is allowed to log in to the WiFi and lots of other
goodies like that. So that if the password becomes open knowledge, the
actual machine has to be permitted by the router before it is allowed to log on.

Dig up the manual for your particular Modem/Router, and just follow the
instructions.

It's actually quite simple. Keep a record of your current settings and any
changes you make. Six months down the track, you won't be able to rely on
your memory of the various settings.

Regards,

Jack
