Phones are made for people with skinny little fingers. Mine will cover three of the onscreen 'keys' and results are unpredictable. Near useless ... But EVERYTHING wants an app these days. Hmm ... I wonder if the Disability Act might be leveraged ?

Not me. :-) I find that it's like that with musical instruments too. If someone asks me how to make a G shape on a guitar, it's much easier for me to just pick up a guitar and let my fingers do the walking. My fingers speak mandolin, too. I've come to think of the interface between strings and notes or chords as the equivalent of a device driver. Switch instruments, switch drivers - and presto, a song you know on one instrument comes out on another. The high-level functions that tell you which chords to play and/or sing remain the same. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Growth for the sake of \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | growth is the ideology X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | of the cancer cell. / \ if you read it the right way. | -- Edward Abbey

I find that works between Irish flute/tin whistle and guitar/banjo. G is G. Some though is required with a Boehm flute since the F is really F# on the Irish flute. I learned about CAGED a long time ago for guitars.

It all gets encoded in the cerebellum - becomes off-conscious 'automatic'. Cerebellums are weird - whole different wiring plan than everything else, oddly connected to the rest. Likely a much older brain that gradually, partially, got integrated with the newer stuff.

Not me. :-) I learned typing on a manual typewriter in high school. Then again, using a Cortez Peters textbook, in Radioman School in the USCG. The Cortez Peters system improved my speed and error rate. https://holmencomputerapps.weebly.com/cortez-peters.html Obquote: "Rhythm - you must learn to type with even rhythm. Good even rhythm will rid you of tension, anxiety and will minimize mistakes made. Instead of focusing on "quick where is the next letter" even rhythm will let you focus on what to type. If you slow down to achieve even rhythm you will in effect speed up." One exception is Arch. 'vi' is a hard link to ex which comes up in the visual mode for that old timey flavor.

IIRC that source was lost or elusive for a long time, or perhaps held back by lack of permission to distribute? I think there were recent attempts to distribute vi from that source (which may rely on Caldera having had the rights to the UNIX source?). But I haven't checked this further, and may have grossly misunderstood something... There was also a third version in busybox, right? Like Unix itself ed and vi had licensing problems. https://tech.slashdot.org/story/02/01/24/0146248/caldera-releases- original-unices-under-bsd-license Somehow at least the legacy vi code escaped the AT&T, UNIX System Laboratories, Novel, Caldera, SCO mess. Stevie was a clone of vi and Vim followed on Stevie. Doing a clean room implementation of vi wasn't difficult. Today somebody would probably try to patent ':w' as a unique key combination. It should be an object less that the companies that spent more time in legal wrangles than product development are footnotes in computer folklore.

The Arch vi is the real thing. I've no idea what version it is because real vi doesn't do --version or much of anything useful.

It does leave out some of the bugs. The nvi implementation claims to be bug compatible, but then compare how modelines work in Real vi versus nvi and you'll be unable to believe that claim. I also don't think it supports "arbitrary ex mode command in third column of a tags file": tagname filename operation Invoke a tag with, say, ":tag tagname" and then it opens the named file and runs the operation. In defanged editors, the only operations supported are movements, like a :linenumber or /search-pattern/. In real vi you can chain ex commands to do things like :1,20 w >>$HOME/.profile | 99 That's going to append twenty lines to the user's .profile and then jump to line 99 of the file. stevie / elvis / neovim / busybox vi / ... are at best vi flavored editor. >> The one on FreeBSD which I think is technically "nex" is much closer out >> of the box. nex / nvi are the same, right? > :he compatible has the disclaimer > > When this option is set, numerous other options are set to make Vim as > Vi-compatible as possible. > > The Arch vi is the real thing. I've no idea what version it is because > real vi doesn't do --version or much of anything useful. In vi, the standard way to get the version is with ":version". It looks like arch is using Heirloom Vi: https://ex-vi.sourceforge.net/ That is a port of old code with many multibyte (eg UTF-8) fixes. It should work with hardcopy terminals, which a lot of other vi implementations (including vim) will not do. Those others expect you to use ex mode on hardcopy terminals. I learned vi on Digital Unix, A/UX, HP-UX, SunOS 4, and Solaris 2.(various), but I dabbled in vi clones for a long time, and was using vim back in the 2.x versions. Elvis is still the default vi in Slackware, and I've used recent versions of elvis for that reason. nvi is default on NetBSD, and probably that FreeBSD one mentioned above. I use NetBSD regularly and other BSDs very rarely. In the vim distro there are sample macro packages. The ones to run Conway's Game of Life were written by me on a Solaris box. The Solaris vi can run them, but eventually it crashes out because there is a bug that makes real vi (at least real vi of that era) forget marks after a while. Vim will just work. Neovim fails to even start. On the Debian system I'm working on right now those macros are in /usr/share/vim/vim90/macros/life/ Elijah ------ admits elvis is a pretty good vi imitation, but still not perfect

I wouldn't know and I don't care to look. I don't find scripting language integration with the editor to my tastes. I did just see someone in comp.editors complaining about something Lua related in vim, and I could believe vim offers it as a compile option. I have not compile vim myself in a while.
