#36061 — Other tools like "whois"?

I heard about an outfit called "undocufund.org" on the local college radio
station.

Seems they collect and give money to illegal aliens since they are "unfairly
left out" of State and Federal benefit programs and they entreat you to send
them money.

(This would drive my mom basllistic, as we used to say. She was a legal
immigrant from Latvia and insisted that everyone who wanted in should wait
his turn and go through the hoops and jumps she had to.)

Curious, I used "whois" to see info about these guys.

Here's part of the output:
Domain Name: undocufund.org
Registry Domain ID: 3a2a7cc5edf44d768125e125dfaba031-LROR

...

The REDACTED part is new to me...are there any other tools besides whois to
help me satisfy my curiousity?

I guess I'll go visit the actual website...duh...but it's nice to have a
Linuxy question.

That's probably because of the General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR). Thus you need to visit their website to get more information.

This sort of whois masking predates the GDPR. Many TLD registration bodies
(such as CIRA for .ca domains) instituted "domain privacy" rules in the
early 2000's (2008, for CIRA, for example) to cut down on identity theft
and personal detail harvesting from whois records.

Ah, yes. I do recall something about this in the EU...that makes sense.

Or do a whois on the ip address to see who their hosting provider is.

That might be a completely different company - and often is. The host IP
might for example be at OVH in France or Canada, while the whois lists
Godaddy in the US.

Possibly `whois` on the IP address would be useful, but often it just
maps to a big provider. Other thing I like to do is examine all the
subject alternative names (SANs) on the https certificate. Take a look
at the list on aol.com for example.

I don't like it, but I have the privacy stuff on my domains, too. I
tried not having it and I got a lot of spam to the email address and
phone calls and text messages to the phone number. It was quite
unpleasant. I set the address to a PO Box, I got no junk mail there
for that. I _do_ get junk mail for a trademark using that same PO Box.

Elijah

actually, two trademarks, and the junk always comes in pairs
