#30090 — MX Linux terminal placement

FromJohnny <johnny@invalid.net>

The terminal always opens in the upper left corner of the screen. Is
there anyway to get it to open in the bottom right corner?

I'm using a 32 inch Samsung TV for my monitor, and it would be a lot
more comfortable to look down to the right instead of up to the left.

Configure your window manager to open it in the bottom right corner.

Or, have the terminal ask to be positioned in the bottom right corner. It
might take the -geometry flag to do it

How do I get the terminal to ask? I see no man page for terminal.

I found the man page. It's man xfce4-terminal. Thanks, I'll work on

If you're launching the xterm/terminal from an icon, make your changes to
icon's properties. Generally a right-click on the icon will show a menu
item called 'properties'. Or maybe even a set of text fields, one of
which might be 'Command' showing the actual command that the icon uses
when it launches the program. Put your CLI arguments there.

I tend to use a script to launch a program. A script can be made as long or
as short as needed. I put the script name and path in the 'Command' field.

This the script that launches my xterm, with the very imaginative name of
'xtermj':

================================

#!/bin/bash
# jvs script
# opens normal user xterm with black on white background
#2005

xhost + localhost >/dev/null
xterm -sb -rightbar -sl 8000 -fg black \
        -geom 115x58 -bg white &

================================

I use only the 'size' part of the -geom argument, but you could add the
window-open position there as well.

FWIW, the geometry argument specifies up to four things (two of which I have
let default in the example above):
  the width of the window,
  the height of the window,
  the distance between the window and the left (or right, depending on sign)
    border of the screen, and
  the distance between the window and the top (or bottom, depending on sign)
    border of the screen

A full geometry might read
  80x24+1000+50
for an 80 column wide, 24 line long terminal positioned so that it's left
edge is 1000 pixels away from the left edge of the desktop, and it's top
edge is positioned 50 pixels away from the top edge of the desktop.

For details, read the "GEOMETRY SPECIFICATIONS" section of the X(7) manpage
("man 7 X")

Thanks, I was looking for that.

It amazes me that someone is smart enough to create a terminal, and
then can't write simple instructions on how to use it.

I would have never thought of man 7 X when it said Read X(7) for more
information.

I looked in the window manager, and don't see any way to do it.

Using Window Manager Tweaks, I was able to place the terminal where I
want it.

It wasn't as simple as it sounds.

One of the Window Manager Tweaks is to open the window under the mouse
pointer.

Usually the terminal icon is in the panel on the bottom left of the
screen, so the terminal opened on the bottom left of the screen.

I moved the terminal icon to the right side of the panel, and now it
opens on the bottom right of the screen.

I'd say you don't give the most important information. It's not the
terminal which places itself where it wants. It's the WM which does it.
So, you have to tell which WM you are using.

I won't be able to help because in the WM I'm using, it takes the size
it can. But the one able to help would need to know.

There's a program that is useful in this kind of case:

    https://github.com/GNOME/devilspie

I use it with fvwm2. It's not perfect, but it puts the vast
majority of my web browser windows where I want them.

I've no issue. I know exactly how my terminal will open : like any
other Window. And I know that the way my Windows are managed have
nothing in common with the way his Windows are managed.

I'm using i3wm :
<https://i3wm.org>

I know : it's weird, but I like it.
