Ubuntu does not like the user > to do things they discourage. Fair enough - I'm a Slackware user myself. But for the benefit of OP, s/he should be aware that the Ubuntu repos are MASSIVE, and surely xscreensaver can be installed quite easily. It'd probably just be a matter of running: apt install xscreensaver as root. I haven't used GNOME in many years, so I don't know if it plays well with xscreensaver or not. I would recommend XFce as a DE that works really well with xscreensaver.
