That's why digital Unicode implementations are difficult and fraught
with uncertainty and error.

Language, and alphabets, are human concoctions and attempting to
get computers to represent this human chaos is a continuing challenge
even after almost 50 years

ASCII was easy: one character, one code.

But Unicode is a completely different animal.  For example, in order
to meaningfully sort Unicode expressions one must resort to "normalization"
of which there are several types.  Consequently, the software that
deals with all of this is highly complex.

Digital computers were originally developed to, guess what, compute.
That is, the digital computer was a critical adjunct to scientific
and engineering calculations.  They replaced the legions of human
"calculators," usually women, who pounded away at desktop adding machines. 

However, once applications begin to stray beyond science and engineering
then the problems began.
